Trevoh Chalobah reveals Chelsea regret and Cesc Fabregas role in 'amazing' Como transfer

According to a report by Football London on Wednesday, October 21, 2026, former Chelsea defender Trevoh Chalobah has revealed that he always hoped to become a club legend before leaving Stamford Bridge to join Como during the summer transfer window.

The 27-year-old ended his 18-year association with Chelsea after completing a move to Como in a deal worth more than £30 million, despite having two years remaining on his contract, with an option to extend until June 2029.

Chelsea reportedly received an initial £25.7 million from the transfer, with a further £5.1 million potentially available through add-ons. Chalobah’s departure was part of the club’s summer clearout, which generated approximately £375 million in revenue.

Speaking to The Athletic, the England international expressed his disappointment at leaving the club where he developed from a young age, despite believing he had enjoyed one of his best seasons.

"The team didn’t achieve what we wanted to achieve last season, but I thought I had one of my best seasons, playing the most games and scoring a few goals.

"I’d been there since I was eight, and I wanted to be a legend there, but sometimes the way we plan things is not how things work out," he said.

Chalobah also revealed that Chelsea remained close to his heart despite his move to Italy. He continues to follow the club’s matches and maintains contact with former teammates and staff.

During his time at Stamford Bridge, the defender made 151 appearances across all competitions, winning two FIFA Club World Cup titles, the FA Cup, the UEFA Conference League and the UEFA Super Cup.

He also acknowledged that competition for places had always been intense at Chelsea, particularly when experienced defenders Thiago Silva, Andreas Christensen and Antonio Rudiger were part of the squad.

Explaining his decision to join Como, Chalobah credited manager Cesc Fabregas with playing an important role in convincing him to take on a new challenge.

"The manager reached out to me over the summer and explained the project and where he saw me playing. I read about the rise of Como, how exciting the team is," he said.

Chalobah added that Fabregas’s interest in his experience made the move appealing. His familiarity with Italy and appreciation of the country’s lifestyle also influenced his decision to join the club.

Reflecting on his new environment, the defender said: "The football is amazing. The manager we have is great," he said.
