Zinedine Zidane has indicated that Kylian Mbappé will be given the freedom to operate in his preferred attacking position when France return to international competition. According to a report by Madrid Universal on Saturday, November 7, 2026, the Real Madrid forward could feature on the left wing during the upcoming UEFA Nations League fixtures under the new national team manager.
France are preparing for their second international break of the season, with meetings against Italy and Türkiye scheduled as part of their Nations League campaign. Les Bleus currently occupy the top position in their group after collecting three victories from their opening four matches.
Zidane's latest squad includes four Real Madrid players. Mbappé has been selected alongside Aurélien Tchouaméni, Ibrahima Konaté and Eduardo Camavinga, giving the manager several familiar options as he prepares for the upcoming fixtures.
There has been considerable curiosity about how Zidane intends to use Mbappé following his appointment. Their opportunity to work together during the previous international break was limited because the forward picked up an injury during France's victory over Türkiye.
This time, however, the circumstances are different, with the 27-year-old expected to be available for selection. Zidane has now offered an indication of his plans, explaining that Mbappé will be able to play in the position where he feels most comfortable.
The French manager acknowledged that the Madrid attacker possesses the versatility to operate in several areas of the forward line. Nevertheless, he made clear that there would be no difficulty allowing the player to occupy his preferred role rather than restricting him to a particular position.
His comments suggest that Mbappé could be deployed on the left flank instead of being used exclusively as France's central striker. The position is familiar to the forward, who has frequently demonstrated his ability to create opportunities and threaten defenders when starting from the left.
Zidane's approach could also attract attention at Real Madrid, where Mbappé's positioning has become an important consideration in discussions about the team's attacking structure.
José Mourinho reportedly prefers the Frenchman to remain the club's main centre-forward because Madrid currently lack an established alternative capable of consistently leading the attack. The options available behind him have not yet provided sufficient evidence that they can take over the responsibility on a regular basis.
Endrick and Carlos Espí are among the players who have yet to establish themselves as dependable starting choices in the number nine position. Consequently, keeping Mbappé centrally could remain an important part of Madrid's plans.
However, Zidane's willingness to use him on the left could offer Madrid useful information about other tactical possibilities. The forward's performances in that position may help demonstrate how effectively he can combine with teammates while operating away from the central attacking role.
The situation could become particularly relevant if Madrid eventually reconsider Vinícius Júnior's future at the club. Although no immediate change has been established, Mbappé's ability to perform on the left would give the Spanish giants another option when planning their attack.
For now, Zidane's priority will be guiding France through their Nations League fixtures while allowing Mbappé to perform comfortably. His tactical decision could nevertheless provide an interesting indication of how the forward might be used at club level in the future.
