Chelsea midfielder Moises Caicedo has acknowledged that improving his communication on the pitch remains an important part of his development, with coaches encouraging him to become more vocal and take greater control of situations during matches. In comments reported by Football London on Friday, October 16, 2026, the Ecuadorian admitted that speaking up does not come naturally to him, even though he believes he possesses the qualities needed to be a leader.
Since arriving at Stamford Bridge from Brighton & Hove Albion, Caicedo has developed into a central figure in Chelsea’s midfield. His energy, determination and ability to influence games have strengthened his position within the squad. However, the 24-year-old recognises that leadership involves more than delivering strong individual performances, particularly when it comes to directing teammates and helping the team remain organised under pressure.
Speaking to Chelsea’s official website, Caicedo explained that several coaches have identified communication as an area where he can make further progress. They believe his leadership qualities could have an even greater impact if he became more comfortable giving instructions and encouraging those around him during games.
The midfielder admitted that he continues to work on this aspect of his game, although communicating loudly and frequently is not part of his natural personality. Nevertheless, he understands why coaches consider it an important skill and remains determined to improve.
When words do not come easily, Caicedo said he tries to communicate through his performances. By showing commitment, maintaining his work rate and setting an example through his actions, he hopes to influence his teammates and contribute to the team’s overall standards.
He also highlighted former Chelsea defender Thiago Silva as a figure whose leadership left a lasting impression on him. The Brazilian was known for supporting teammates, offering guidance and helping maintain discipline within the dressing room. Caicedo regards that approach as an example he can learn from as he continues to grow into his own leadership role.
The Ecuador international, who now serves as one of Chelsea’s captains, described the appointment as a significant honour for both himself and his family. He is determined to respect the club’s leadership tradition while developing a style of captaincy that reflects his personality and strengths.
His remarks come after an interrupted opening to the 2026–27 season, during which injury problems restricted his involvement. Caicedo returned to Chelsea’s starting line-up against Bournemouth and produced a strong performance in the reported 5–1 victory, offering encouragement as he looks to regain consistency.
Chelsea will need the midfielder to remain available as the schedule becomes more demanding. Upcoming encounters with Everton, Tottenham, Liverpool and Manchester United will provide further tests, making Caicedo’s fitness, influence and continued development important to the team’s ambitions.
