According to a report by BBC Sport on Friday, October 30, 2026, Villarreal were handed a disappointing 1-0 defeat by Espanyol in their LaLiga encounter at the Estadio de la CerĂ¡mica.
The hosts began the match brightly and enjoyed a greater share of possession as they attempted to dictate the pace of the game. However, they struggled to convert their control into clear goalscoring opportunities, with Espanyol maintaining a disciplined defensive structure to limit their attacking threat.
Villarreal suffered an early setback in the 18th minute when Gerard Moreno was forced off with an injury and replaced by Nicolas Pepe. Despite continuing to push forward, the home side could not find a way through Espanyol's defence before the break.
Espanyol appeared to have taken the lead four minutes into the second half when Roberto Fernandez found the net, but VAR overturned the goal following a review that identified an earlier foul.
The visitors remained determined and eventually broke the deadlock in the 60th minute. Bryan Zaragoza delivered a dangerous cross into the penalty area, which Leandro Cabrera converted with his right foot to give Espanyol the advantage.
Villarreal responded by stepping up their attacking efforts and introducing fresh options in an attempt to find an equaliser. However, Espanyol remained organised at the back and successfully dealt with the pressure to protect their lead.
Despite finishing the match with 63 per cent possession, Villarreal could not find a breakthrough, leaving them to suffer another disappointing result in front of their home supporters.
The defeat leaves Villarreal 10th in the LaLiga standings with 12 points, while Espanyol climb to 12th place with 11 points after claiming all three points away from home.
