Van Dijk Sends Strong Message To Referee After Bizarre Emegha Clash In Liverpool Vs Chelsea

Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk was reportedly left angry after Chelsea forward Emmanuel Emegha collided with him during Wednesday night’s Carabao Cup clash at Anfield, prompting the Dutch defender to confront referee Darren England over the incident.

According to a report by Metro on Thursday, October 29, 2026, lip-reading specialist Nicola Hickling examined the exchange between Van Dijk and the match official and offered an interpretation of what the Liverpool captain allegedly said following the collision.

The incident took place during the fourth-round meeting between Liverpool and Chelsea, which ended 1-1 after 90 minutes. Liverpool eventually progressed to the quarter-finals by winning a dramatic penalty shootout, although reports of the encounter also highlighted the confrontation involving Van Dijk and Emegha.

The Chelsea forward had entered the match as a substitute in the 68th minute. Just two minutes later, he appeared to run into Van Dijk away from the immediate action, knocking the Liverpool defender to the ground. The challenge attracted attention because of the nature of the contact and the reaction it provoked from the experienced centre-back.

Former Arsenal striker Alan Smith, who was providing analysis during Sky Sports’ broadcast, described the incident as unusual. He observed that Emegha continued running after the collision and noted that Van Dijk subsequently appeared to have something to say about the challenge.

Referee England did not award a punishment against the Chelsea forward for the incident. Van Dijk nevertheless approached the official to express his dissatisfaction, making his feelings about the collision apparent during the exchange.

According to Hickling’s interpretation of the conversation, the Liverpool captain appeared to make particularly strong remarks about Emegha. She suggested that Van Dijk told the referee he had reached the end of his patience with the player and made a further comment indicating that the forward should consider giving up football. However, lip-reading interpretations are not the same as an independently verified recording of the exact words spoken.

Van Dijk was substituted shortly after the exchange, with Jeremy Jacquet coming on in his place. The timing of the change added another talking point to an already eventful contest, although the report did not establish that the substitution was directly connected to the confrontation.

The match ended in disappointment for Chelsea, who were eliminated following the penalty shootout. Several players failed to convert their attempts, including Valentin Barco, Kostas Tsimikas, Ryan Gravenberch and Emegha, whose penalties were reportedly saved. Chelsea defender Wesley Fofana then sent his effort over the crossbar, helping Liverpool secure their progression to the last eight, where they are scheduled to face Bournemouth.

For Emegha, the encounter marked his official Chelsea debut after joining the club from Strasbourg during the summer in a deal reportedly worth €25 million, equivalent to approximately £21 million. The 23-year-old previously scored 31 goals in 78 appearances for the French side, establishing himself as a promising attacking option.

His introduction to life at Stamford Bridge had been delayed by a hamstring injury sustained in July. With Joao Pedro sidelined, Emegha could now compete for a more prominent role in Chelsea’s attack ahead of Saturday’s Premier League meeting with Manchester United.
