Ghanaian football giants Asante Kotoko have been fined GHS 5,000 by the Ghana Football Association (GFA) Disciplinary Committee for breaching the Ghana Premier League regulations following their league match against Debibi United.
The decision comes after the club was found guilty of failing to publish a video containing the match highlights within the required period. According to the disciplinary decision, clubs are expected to release a three-to-five-minute highlights video within 48 hours after a league match.
Asante Kotoko's failure to meet this requirement resulted in the financial sanction, adding another disciplinary matter for the Porcupine Warriors to address as they continue their league campaign.
The GFA's highlights requirement is intended to ensure that match footage is made available within the stipulated period. Publishing highlights allows supporters to catch up on important moments from games, including goals, key chances and other notable incidents.
For a club with a large following such as Asante Kotoko, match highlights are also an important way of keeping supporters connected to the team's performances, particularly those who may not have watched the game live.
Under the disciplinary decision, Kotoko must pay the GHS 5,000 fine within 14 days of being notified of the ruling. The deadline places responsibility on the club to settle the penalty within the period set by the committee.
The disciplinary committee has also issued a warning to the club over future misconduct. Asante Kotoko have been cautioned that further breaches could attract severe sanctions.
The warning means the club will need to pay close attention to its responsibilities under the league's regulations to avoid additional disciplinary action. Although the present case concerns the publication of match highlights rather than an incident on the pitch, it demonstrates that clubs are expected to comply with administrative and media-related requirements as well as the rules governing matches.
The development is another reminder that Ghana Premier League clubs must meet the obligations set by the GFA throughout the season.
For Asante Kotoko, the immediate task is to settle the fine within the prescribed period and ensure that the required procedures are followed in future fixtures. Supporters will now be looking ahead to the club's next matches, while the Porcupine Warriors will be expected to avoid further disciplinary problems.
