Steven Gerrard believes Estevao’s impressive performance against Manchester United could create a difficult selection decision for Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso when Joao Pedro returns from injury. According to a report by Metro on Thursday, November 5, 2026, the former Liverpool captain has praised the Brazilian teenager’s attacking qualities and expects competition for places in Chelsea’s forward line to intensify.
The 19-year-old delivered an encouraging display during Chelsea’s 2-0 Premier League victory over Manchester United at Stamford Bridge on October 31. His direct style, confidence and willingness to take on defenders caught Gerrard’s attention, particularly after the youngster had struggled to secure consistent playing time earlier in the campaign.
Estevao was given his first Premier League start of the season against United, providing an opportunity to demonstrate what he could offer the team. His limited involvement under Alonso had reportedly become a source of frustration, especially after the manager left him out of the starting lineup for Chelsea’s Carabao Cup meeting with Liverpool.
However, the teenager responded positively when selected against United. Operating on the right side of the attack, he repeatedly attempted to unsettle the opposition defence and showed little hesitation when opportunities arose to move forward and create danger.
Speaking on The Overlap, Gerrard described the Brazilian as an entertaining and promising footballer. He particularly appreciated his willingness to attack defenders and make decisive moves in the final third.
"He's exciting. He's great to watch," the former England international said.
"Your typical Brazilian, where it's about flair, it's about quality, but I really like that he's very direct. I like that he's hungry to get shots off."
Gerrard also recalled a moment when Estevao cut inside from the left and produced an effort that required an excellent save from the Manchester United goalkeeper. For the former midfielder, that willingness to attempt shots is an important quality Chelsea should encourage.
He suggested that some of the club’s attacking players can hesitate for too long when approaching the opposition penalty area. In his view, Estevao’s instinct to take responsibility and attempt to score could offer Chelsea something valuable in situations where quick decisions are needed.
The former Liverpool captain also believes the teenager is highly motivated to establish himself under Alonso. He pointed to Estevao’s determination to impress the manager as another positive aspect of his performance.
"He's desperate to impress the manager," he added.
Nevertheless, Gerrard expects Alonso’s biggest challenge to emerge once Joao Pedro has recovered and becomes available again. The Brazilian forward’s return would increase the competition for attacking positions and leave the manager with several players competing for limited places.
Pedro Neto is another important option in Chelsea’s forward line, making the selection process even more complicated. Gerrard acknowledged the quality available to Alonso and questioned how he would fit everyone into the starting team.
"He's going to give Xabi a problem when Joao Pedro comes back, because Pedro Neto's a great player as well, but five doesn't go into that front four, so it's going to be interesting," Gerrard said.
Estevao’s display has strengthened his argument for more opportunities, although he must continue producing convincing performances to establish himself as a regular starter. Chelsea’s attacking depth offers Alonso valuable options, but finding the right balance and managing competition will become increasingly important as the season develops.
