Liverpool have reportedly made contact with the representatives of Borussia Dortmund midfielder Felix Nmecha as they explore potential reinforcements ahead of a possible midfield rebuild in 2027.
According to FootballTransfers, the Merseyside club have expressed interest in the 26-year-old following his encouraging performances in the Bundesliga. However, Liverpool are not expected to submit an immediate transfer offer as they continue assessing their options.
Nmecha is reportedly being considered alongside Monaco midfielder Lamine Camara and Bournemouth’s Alex Scott, both of whom have also emerged as potential targets for the Premier League side.
The former Manchester City academy graduate has established himself as a versatile midfielder at Dortmund, combining defensive responsibilities with the ability to advance possession and contribute to attacking moves. His contract with the German club runs until 2030, meaning Liverpool could face a challenging negotiation if they decide to pursue his signature.
During the previous season, Nmecha scored five goals and registered three assists in 39 appearances across the Bundesliga and Champions League. His pressing, tactical awareness, precise passing and ability to carry the ball forward have contributed to his growing reputation in German football.
Liverpool are assessing midfield options amid uncertainty surrounding Alexis Mac Allister’s long-term future at Anfield. The club could therefore consider players capable of offering greater depth and flexibility as they plan for upcoming transfer windows.
Bundesliga expert Ronan Murphy told FootballTransfers that Nmecha’s all-round qualities could make him a suitable addition to Liverpool’s midfield. Murphy described the Dortmund player as a box-to-box midfielder who uses his passing and ball-carrying ability to move play forward.
The analyst also suggested that Dortmund’s defensive approach might be restricting some of Nmecha’s attacking contributions. A change of environment or tactical system could potentially allow the midfielder to develop further and demonstrate more of his offensive capabilities.
However, any potential move could attract attention beyond football because of controversy surrounding Nmecha’s social media activity.
Reports from Sport Bild and Wolfsburger Allgemeine Zeitung indicated that Dortmund introduced a contractual provision allowing the club to examine the midfielder’s social media posts following controversy over content he shared before joining the team in 2023.
The reported clause, described as an “Instagram clause,” could reportedly expose Nmecha to a fine of up to €1 million if his posts breach the club’s values and principles.
Nmecha has previously rejected accusations that he is homophobic or transphobic, arguing that some of his comments were misunderstood or taken out of context. He has also stated that his Christian faith does not mean he discriminates against other people.
Despite Liverpool’s reported interest, the club have not submitted a formal bid, and Dortmund’s willingness to consider a transfer remains uncertain. Nmecha’s contractual situation, performances and suitability for Liverpool’s plans will likely influence whether the interest develops into concrete negotiations in the coming months.
