Jose Mourinho’ Plan to Counter Barcelona’s Midfield Dominance

Jose Mourinho is reportedly preparing a tactical strategy to disrupt Barcelona’s midfield in the upcoming El Clasico, with Real Madrid’s expected starting lineup featuring several surprising selections that could attract considerable attention ahead of the highly anticipated encounter.

Barcelona manager Hansi Flick is also understood to be prioritising the weekend showdown. His reported rotation of players during the midweek meeting with Paris Saint-Germain was aimed at managing the squad and ensuring his key players remain prepared for one of the biggest fixtures of the season.

Real Madrid are approaching the contest with growing confidence, but Mourinho is aware that defeating Barcelona will require more than individual quality. The Portuguese coach is reportedly focused on assembling a midfield capable of matching his opponents’ technical ability, physical intensity and control of possession.

According to reports from MARCA, Mourinho has been considering a midfield arrangement designed to challenge Barcelona in the centre of the pitch while creating opportunities for Real Madrid to transition quickly into attack.

Aurelien Tchouameni is expected to occupy the defensive midfield position, where his physical strength, positional awareness and ability to break up opposition attacks could prove important. His presence would provide protection for the defence while helping Real Madrid limit Barcelona’s influence in central areas.

One of the more notable aspects of the reported plan is Federico Valverde’s expected deployment at right-back. The Uruguayan’s versatility and energy make him a useful option in the position, but his selection there would mean he is unavailable to occupy his usual midfield role alongside Tchouameni.

Instead, Eduardo Camavinga is reportedly expected to partner the French international in the middle of the pitch. The decision would represent a significant opportunity for Camavinga, who has struggled to establish himself as a regular starter during the current campaign.

However, his encouraging display against RB Leipzig is believed to have strengthened Mourinho’s confidence in his ability to contribute against Barcelona. The midfielder’s physical presence, progressive passing and dribbling could help Real Madrid resist pressure, retain possession and move the ball forward more effectively.

Camavinga’s inclusion would also offer Madrid greater flexibility when transitioning between defensive and attacking phases. His ability to carry the ball through congested areas could be particularly valuable against a Barcelona side that seeks to dominate possession and apply pressure when opponents attempt to build from the back.

Arda Guler is another player expected to feature prominently in the reported tactical arrangement, with the Turkish international tipped to operate on the right flank. His creativity and technical quality could provide an additional attacking dimension alongside the central midfield partnership and Jude Bellingham.

Guler is likely to be encouraged to move into advanced positions, where his vision and ability to deliver incisive passes could help Madrid penetrate Barcelona’s defensive structure. His movement may also create space for teammates and give the team another route towards goal.

By combining Tchouameni’s defensive qualities, Camavinga’s mobility, Guler’s creativity and Bellingham’s attacking influence, Mourinho reportedly hopes to challenge Barcelona’s control of the midfield. Valverde’s expected presence at right-back could add further energy and defensive security.

The proposed approach would aim to disrupt Barcelona’s passing rhythm, compete physically in central areas and exploit openings during transitions. However, the effectiveness of the strategy will ultimately depend on the players’ execution, their ability to maintain discipline and how Barcelona respond to Real Madrid’s tactical choices.

With El Clasico approaching, the reported lineup remains a talking point, although the final selection and tactical plan will need to be confirmed closer to kickoff.
