Reece James’ long-term successor learns harsh lesson in Strasbourg collapse against PSG

Chelsea prospect Genesis Antwi experienced a difficult outing as Strasbourg lost their advantage and suffered a defeat against Paris Saint-Germain in Ligue 1 on Saturday.

According to a report by Football London on Monday, October 19, 2026, the 19-year-old right-back remains a promising talent for Chelsea, although he was involved in several important defensive situations during Strasbourg’s late collapse against the French champions.

Antwi joined Strasbourg on loan for the 2026/27 campaign to gain regular playing time and continue his development away from Stamford Bridge.

The Chelsea academy graduate is regarded as a potential long-term replacement for club captain Reece James. However, he still needs to gain experience and demonstrate his readiness before securing a regular place in Chelsea’s senior team.

Strasbourg began the match positively and took the lead in the 17th minute when Giovani Reyna found the net following an assist from Gessime Yassine, who has reportedly attracted interest from Chelsea.

Antwi played a part in the opening goal by pressing high up the pitch and forcing a turnover that helped Strasbourg create the scoring opportunity.

The home side held on to their lead until the 77th minute, when PSG defender Illia Zabarnyi restored parity. The centre-back found himself unmarked at the back post and converted an Ousmane Dembele cross after finding space between Antwi and Karim Coulibaly, who were occupied with other players.

PSG subsequently took control of the contest, with Dembele scoring in the 85th minute to put the visitors ahead. However, Antwi was not blamed for the goal.

The young Chelsea defender faced further difficulties during stoppage time when Desire Doue scored to complete PSG’s comeback. Antwi appeared caught between following Doue’s movement and attempting to prevent the ball from crossing the goal line.

Despite these defensive setbacks, the defeat does not take away from the progress Antwi has made since joining Strasbourg on loan.

His regular involvement in Ligue 1 is giving him valuable experience against quality opposition while helping him adapt to the physical and tactical demands of senior football.

The encounter against PSG also demonstrated the importance of defensive positioning, awareness and quick decision-making, particularly when facing technically gifted attackers.

For Antwi, the experience could prove beneficial as he continues working towards his ambition of establishing himself in Chelsea’s first team.
