According to a report by Fabrizio Romano on Wednesday, October 14, 2026, Manchester United defender Lisandro Martinez has admitted that the club do not currently have the strongest squad compared with other top teams.
The Argentine made the remarks during an interview with CBS, adding to his recent criticism of Manchester United’s recruitment strategy and football leadership.
“For me, we do not have the best squad at the moment compared to other top teams,” Martinez said.
His comments reflect concerns about Manchester United’s ability to compete with their major rivals with the players currently available to the team.
Martinez has recently called for greater investment and accountability at the club, arguing that resolving the team's problems requires more than changing managers.
The defender previously questioned whether former manager Michael Carrick had received enough support from the club, saying he did not think so and acknowledging that Carrick had done his best.
He also expressed disappointment with Manchester United’s summer recruitment, revealing that he had expected the club to invest more in strengthening the squad.
Martinez further turned his attention to the club’s technical leadership, stating that he expected more from the technical director.
The Argentine warned that failing to address the problems could leave Manchester United facing greater difficulties next season.
“If you don’t change, next season it’s a big problem,” he said.
The defender’s latest comments have renewed discussions about the quality of Manchester United’s squad and whether the club has done enough to close the gap on their rivals.
His assessment also raises questions about the effectiveness of the club’s recruitment strategy, the depth of the squad and the level of investment required to improve performances.
Martinez’s remarks come amid growing scrutiny of Manchester United’s football structure, with attention focused on the responsibilities of the club’s technical leadership and the need to strengthen the team.
The defender’s message suggests that significant improvements may be necessary if Manchester United are to compete consistently with the leading sides and avoid further difficulties in the coming season.
