Sports analyst Richard Obeng, popularly known as OB, has called for the complete demolition and reconstruction of the Baba Yara Sports Stadium in Kumasi, arguing that repeatedly renovating the existing facility is no longer a sustainable solution.
Speaking on Kessben Sports, Obeng expressed concern about the amount of money that has been spent on renovating the stadium over the years without achieving a lasting solution to its infrastructure challenges.
According to him, approximately $20 million has reportedly been spent on renovation works at the Baba Yara Stadium in recent years alone. Despite the significant financial investment, concerns about the condition and suitability of the facility continue to emerge.
Obeng believes that instead of committing additional resources to repeated renovations, authorities should consider demolishing the existing structure and constructing a completely new, modern stadium from the ground up.
He argued that rebuilding the facility would provide an opportunity to address the structural and infrastructural challenges that have affected the stadium while ensuring that future investments deliver long-term benefits.
The Baba Yara Sports Stadium, located in Kumasi, is one of Ghana's most important sporting facilities and serves as the home ground of Asante Kotoko. It has also hosted several major domestic and international football matches over the years.
However, the stadium has faced repeated concerns regarding its condition, with questions raised about its ability to meet the required standards for hosting major international football competitions.
Obeng's proposal has therefore reopened discussions about the future of the historic sporting facility and the most effective way to restore it to a suitable standard.
His position suggests that continuous renovation could lead to further expenditure without guaranteeing a permanent solution.
Although no official decision to demolish the stadium has been announced, his comments have added to the growing debate about the need for a lasting infrastructure solution for one of Ghana's most recognisable football venues.
