‘Forget 2030 World Cup And 2027 AFCON’ – Nii Lantey Vanderpuye Calls For Eight-Years Rebuild

According to a report by 3News on Tuesday, October 20, 2026, former Sports Minister Nii Lantey Vanderpuye has called on Ghana to prioritise an eight-year rebuilding programme for the Black Stars instead of focusing on immediate ambitions at the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) and the 2030 FIFA World Cup.

Vanderpuye made the remarks during an interview with Sir John on Akoma 87.9 FM's GhanAkoma programme, where he discussed the challenges facing Ghana's senior national football team and the need for a long-term development strategy.

He urged football authorities to look beyond the upcoming major competitions and concentrate on building a strong and competitive team capable of achieving sustainable success over the next eight years.

The former Sports Minister also criticised the frequent changes in player selection. He questioned why Ghana used more than 100 players during the World Cup qualifiers, arguing that such an approach could undermine team cohesion and prevent players from developing a strong understanding of one another.

Vanderpuye further questioned the decision to appoint a 73-year-old coach while pursuing a rebuilding agenda. He argued that the technical direction of the Black Stars should align with the country's long-term objectives.

He also criticised the Ghana Football Association (GFA), claiming that football administration in the country has become overly focused on the senior national team at the expense of broader football development.

In expressing his concerns, Vanderpuye argued that Ghana needs a comprehensive plan that includes consistent player selection, effective coaching, grassroots development and stronger football structures.

His proposal places emphasis on long-term planning rather than immediate tournament results. Implementing such a strategy would require coordinated efforts from the GFA, coaches, clubs and other stakeholders to establish a clear direction for Ghanaian football.

The debate comes as Ghana continues to face questions about the future direction of the Black Stars and the measures needed to improve the team's competitiveness in international football.
