According to a report by London Evening Standard on Friday, October 30, 2026, Chelsea are preparing to host Manchester United at Stamford Bridge on Saturday as they attempt to end a run of two consecutive defeats. Manager Xabi Alonso is hopeful that Cole Palmer will be available again, although defender Maxence Lacroix is a major doubt after picking up an injury.
Palmer was absent from Chelsea’s Carabao Cup meeting with Liverpool because he was suspended following his red card against Tottenham Hotspur. His teammates subsequently suffered further disappointment at Anfield on Wednesday, losing the tie through a penalty shootout.
Chelsea’s defensive options have also been affected by Lacroix’s injury. The French centre-back was forced to leave the Liverpool match shortly before half-time, raising concerns about a possible hamstring problem. Alonso said it was too early to establish the full extent of the injury and explained that additional medical examinations would provide a clearer picture in the coming days.
The situation adds to an already challenging injury list at Stamford Bridge. Reece James is expected to remain out until the new year after undergoing knee surgery, while Joao Pedro is also facing an extended spell away from action.
Alonso confirmed that Pedro sustained a thigh injury and would need more time to recover. The Brazilian is continuing his rehabilitation, but the club has not yet set a definite date for his return.
Chelsea are also monitoring the fitness of Malo Gusto and Moises Caicedo after both experienced physical difficulties during the Liverpool encounter. Caicedo continued playing despite discomfort, while Gusto was affected by cramps during the demanding fixture. Further assessments will determine whether either player can feature against United.
There has been more encouraging news concerning goalkeeper Emi Martinez. The Argentine could return sooner than initially expected following surgery for a broken jaw. He has reportedly consulted a specialist about using protective equipment to help facilitate his comeback.
Jorrel Hato and Pep Chavarria, who both missed the trip to Anfield, could also become available for Saturday's game. However, Jamie Gittens remains sidelined after sustaining an ankle injury while representing England Under-21s.
Chelsea's predicted starting XI is Penders in goal, with Acheampong, Colwill and Fofana in defence. Neto, Caicedo, Henderson and Hato are expected to form the midfield, while Palmer and Rogers could operate behind Welbeck in attack.
The players listed as injured are Gittens, Martinez, Lacroix, Joao Pedro and James. Gusto, Caicedo, Chavarria and Hato remain doubts pending fitness assessments. Chelsea will be hoping that the final medical updates provide Alonso with enough options to assemble a competitive team against Manchester United.
