Luis de la Fuente explains why Barcelona midfielder was left out of Spain squad

Spain head coach Luis de la Fuente has explained the reasons behind Gavi's absence from the national team's squad for the upcoming international fixtures, making it clear that the Barcelona midfielder must continue improving and working hard if he wants to regain his place.

The 22-year-old was one of the most notable omissions when De la Fuente announced his selection for Spain's UEFA Nations League encounters against the Czech Republic and England. His absence has generated considerable discussion, particularly given his importance to both Barcelona and the national team in recent years.

However, Gavi's limited involvement at club level appears to have influenced the manager's decision. The midfielder has found it difficult to establish himself as a regular starter under Barcelona coach Hansi Flick, managing only seven appearances across all competitions this season. During those outings, he has accumulated just 211 minutes of playing time and has started only twice.

His lack of consistent opportunities has made it difficult for him to demonstrate his full abilities and maintain the competitive rhythm required to secure a place in Spain's squad. Although his talent and previous contributions remain highly regarded, the national team manager appears determined to select players who are currently receiving sufficient playing time and performing consistently for their clubs.

Speaking about the decision, De la Fuente stressed that Gavi remains an important figure in his plans and continues to enjoy the confidence and affection of the coaching staff. Nevertheless, he explained that making an exception for the Barcelona midfielder would be unfair to other players who have earned their places through their performances.

The Spain coach acknowledged that Gavi possesses qualities that make him worthy of special consideration, but insisted that the selection process must also respect those who are currently part of the squad. He emphasised that the players selected represent the strongest available options at the moment, while reaffirming how highly the coaching staff value the young midfielder.

De la Fuente also offered advice on what Gavi needs to do to return to the national team. He encouraged the Barcelona star to remain committed to his development, continue working hard and focus on improving his performances until he earns another opportunity.

The manager admitted that securing a place in the Spanish national team is increasingly difficult because of the high quality of players competing for selection. He explained that everyone must continue developing and maintaining strong performances to remain part of the group.

His remarks suggest that Gavi has not been permanently removed from Spain's plans. Instead, the decision appears to be based on his current situation at Barcelona, with the coaching staff expecting him to regain regular playing time and demonstrate the form that previously made him an important member of the national side.

At Barcelona, however, the midfielder faces significant competition for places in Flick's starting lineup. The German manager has several options available, including Pedri, Frenkie de Jong, Marc Bernal, Fermin Lopez and Rodri. Their presence has made it increasingly challenging for Gavi to secure a consistent role in the team's midfield.

Despite possessing excellent technical ability, impressive energy and the versatility to operate in different midfield positions, the youngster has struggled to obtain the minutes needed to build confidence and establish momentum. His ability to contribute in advanced midfield areas or operate further forward and out wide gives Flick additional tactical options, but it has not guaranteed him a regular starting position.

Gavi's situation therefore presents an important challenge as he attempts to return to his previous level and strengthen his position at both club and international level. More consistent involvement with Barcelona could improve his chances of earning another call-up.

Meanwhile, Barcelona still have five players represented in De la Fuente's latest selection. Goalkeeper Joan Garcia, defender Pau Cubarsi, midfielders Pedri and Fermin Lopez, alongside teenage winger Lamine Yamal, have all received invitations to represent Spain in the upcoming fixtures.
