Chelsea youngster Estêvão Willian is reportedly concerned about his limited playing time under manager Xabi Alonso, with the Brazilian forward eager to secure more opportunities to establish himself in the first team.
The 19-year-old has reportedly accumulated just 47 minutes of Premier League action this season, a significant reduction from his involvement during his promising first campaign at Stamford Bridge. His limited appearances have raised questions about his role as Chelsea continue to search for consistency.
Although the Blues have demonstrated considerable attacking potential and remain among the league’s more prolific scoring sides, their recent results have been less convincing. They have recorded only two victories in their last six Premier League matches, while Saturday’s home defeat to Tottenham exposed areas that still require improvement.
The loss also brought renewed attention to Alonso’s selection decisions, particularly his use of attacking players and the opportunities available to younger members of the squad.
Estêvão made 24 Premier League appearances last season and scored eight goals across all competitions, helping to establish himself as one of Chelsea’s promising young talents. He has also become a regular member of Brazil’s national team, making his lack of club minutes increasingly noteworthy.
Reports suggest the forward believes he deserves a greater role, although his immediate priority remains convincing Alonso that he merits more time on the pitch. Rather than seeking an immediate departure, he is understood to be focused on improving his position within the squad.
Alonso’s decision to hand summer arrival Geovany Quenda his first start against Tottenham has added another dimension to the situation. Quenda was selected ahead of Estêvão for the London derby, with the Brazilian introduced as a substitute in the 72nd minute.
Competition for places on the right flank has also complicated Estêvão’s efforts to secure regular appearances. Pedro Neto has contributed three goals this season and remains another option for Alonso in that position, increasing the challenge facing the young Brazilian.
Despite the limited opportunities, Chelsea reportedly continue to regard Estêvão as an important part of their long-term plans. The club is said to be interested in discussing a new contract with him, even though he still has seven years remaining on his existing agreement.
Barcelona and other clubs are reportedly monitoring developments, but securing his services would likely prove difficult. Chelsea could demand a substantial transfer fee, with his estimated market value reportedly standing at €110.9 million.
Alonso has indicated that Estêvão will receive opportunities to demonstrate his ability. The Chelsea manager has also pointed to a fitness issue during the summer as one factor behind the winger’s reduced involvement, suggesting that his situation may improve as the campaign progresses.
The upcoming Carabao Cup meeting with Liverpool on Wednesday could provide Estêvão with another chance to impress. With Chelsea balancing domestic competitions and the need to improve their results, the forward will hope to use any opportunity to demonstrate why he deserves a more prominent role in Alonso’s plans.
