According to a report by Chelsea Chronicles on Tuesday, November 3, 2026, Chelsea could be left regretting their decision to sell Djordje Petrovic after the Serbian goalkeeper continued to impress at Bournemouth, with former Premier League goalkeeper Brad Friedel questioning the club's decision to let him leave Stamford Bridge.
Friedel believes the Blues may have made a mistake by allowing Petrovic to join Bournemouth in a deal worth around £25 million in 2025.
Petrovic initially moved to Chelsea from New England Revolution in 2023 for approximately £14 million. He made 31 appearances for the club, keeping seven clean sheets and conceding 44 goals before joining the Cherries.
The 26-year-old has since established himself at Bournemouth, making 51 appearances, with his performances this season attracting particular attention.
Speaking on talkSPORT, Friedel praised the goalkeeper's progress and suggested Chelsea could now be questioning their decision to sell him.
“They [Bournemouth] have an excellent goalkeeper. He was one of yours,” Friedel told presenter Andy Jacobs. “I really like Djordje. He was over in MLS and then went overseas.
“I think he’s an excellent goalkeeper. I’m wondering if Chelsea feel they should have allowed him to go, but a great gather by Bournemouth,” the former Liverpool, Tottenham, Aston Villa and Blackburn goalkeeper added.
Petrovic has made 11 appearances in all competitions this season, conceding 14 goals and keeping four clean sheets.
Meanwhile, Chelsea's current goalkeeping options have also delivered encouraging performances under manager Xabi Alonso.
Emi Martinez has conceded 11 goals in six appearances and recorded one clean sheet, while Mike Penders has conceded six goals in six matches, keeping three clean sheets.
Penders also has a 70 per cent save percentage, slightly higher than Petrovic's 60 per cent and Martinez's 69.4 per cent.
Martinez leads the trio with 25 saves and has the highest Premier League goals-prevented figure at +1.65.
The Argentine is currently recovering from a fractured jaw, giving Penders an opportunity to establish himself as Chelsea's first-choice goalkeeper.
Although Petrovic's performances at Bournemouth have raised questions about Chelsea's decision, the Blues will hope Martinez and Penders can justify their goalkeeping changes as the season progresses.
