According to Sports and Recreation Minister Kofi Adams, Ghana's Black Stars will qualify for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) despite their disappointing performances in the ongoing qualification campaign.
Speaking in an interview on Asempa FM on Friday, October 16, 2026, Adams expressed confidence in the national team's ability to recover from their recent setbacks and secure a place in the continental tournament.
His comments come after Ghana suffered a 2-0 defeat against Ivory Coast in Bouaké before losing 4-2 to The Gambia at the Accra Sports Stadium on Sunday. The results have left the Black Stars at the bottom of Group C, increasing concerns about their chances of qualifying for the competition.
The disappointing performances have also contributed to growing frustration among supporters, with questions being raised about the team's preparations, technical direction and overall performance. Former head coach Carlos Queiroz has reportedly stepped down from his position, adding to the uncertainty surrounding the national team's immediate future.
Despite the challenges, Adams acknowledged the disappointment surrounding Ghana's defeat to The Gambia while maintaining his belief that the team could still turn its campaign around.
“I must admit that nobody would want to be in my situation when the Black Stars played against The Gambia,” he said.
He added: “It was difficult to watch the team lose. I could not believe what happened, but I am convinced the team will qualify for the AFCON tournament.”
The minister's remarks reflect his determination to remain optimistic despite the pressure facing the national team. However, Ghana will need to improve its performances and secure important results in the remaining qualifying matches to keep its hopes alive.
The Black Stars are expected to face Somalia in a crucial double-header at the Accra Sports Stadium in November. The matches could prove significant in determining whether Ghana can recover from its difficult start and strengthen its position in the qualification race.
A temporary technical team is also expected to be assembled ahead of the upcoming fixtures as preparations continue for the decisive encounters.
The 2027 Africa Cup of Nations will be jointly hosted by Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda, bringing together some of the continent's leading national teams.
For Ghana, qualification remains an important objective as the team seeks to restore confidence among supporters following the recent defeats.
Although Adams remains convinced that the Black Stars will reach the tournament, the team must now translate that confidence into improved performances and positive results on the pitch. The upcoming matches against Somalia will provide an important opportunity to revive the campaign and demonstrate whether Ghana can overcome its current difficulties.
