Real Madrid’s €60m Kees Smit decision proves a masterstroke

Kees Smit has emerged as one of Europe’s most exciting young midfield prospects, but Real Madrid were justified in refusing to meet AZ Alkmaar’s reported €60 million valuation during the summer transfer window. A report published by FootballTransfers on Wednesday, October 21, 2026, highlighted the financial and sporting considerations behind Madrid’s decision to avoid pursuing the Dutch youngster at such a high price.

The 20-year-old made his senior debut for AZ in early 2024 before establishing himself as a regular first-team player the following year. During his first campaign as an undisputed starter, Smit registered five goals and 10 assists, impressive figures that helped earn him his Netherlands senior debut in March and attracted attention from several European clubs.

Real Madrid were among the teams monitoring his development, with scouts reportedly making regular visits to Alkmaar to assess his performances. Newcastle United also considered the midfielder before opting to sign another Dutch prospect, Sean Steur, from Ajax. Despite the reported interest in Smit, however, no club submitted a formal offer before the transfer window closed.

AZ’s financial demands proved a significant obstacle. Smit’s Estimated Transfer Value stands at approximately €20.3 million, considerably below the €60 million reportedly demanded by his club. Newcastle’s reported €23.5 million investment in Steur further illustrates the difference between Smit’s valuation and the fees clubs were prepared to pay for emerging Dutch talent.

Madrid also had sporting reasons to hesitate. Although Smit possesses considerable technical ability and long-term potential, he has yet to reach the standard of the club’s established midfielders. SciSports assessments reportedly suggest that his current ability remains below Madrid’s senior options, while the Spanish giants received a relatively modest rating for their suitability to his playing style and prospects of providing regular playing time.

Staying at AZ could therefore benefit the midfielder’s development. He has signed a two-year contract extension that keeps him at the club until 2030, giving him an opportunity to continue playing regularly and improving his game.

Eredivisie expert Dylan ter Laak believes Smit can progress further in Alkmaar. Another productive season could strengthen his influence in the Dutch league and increase his readiness for a move to a major European club.

Although Madrid may require midfield reinforcements, avoiding an excessive fee for a player still developing appears sensible. Smit has the potential to reach the highest level, but continued progress and regular football remain essential to his development.
