According to a report by Fabrizio Romano on Monday, October 26, 2026, Jose Mourinho has praised Andriy Lunin for his composed display in goal for Real Madrid during El Clasico.
Lunin was handed a starting role after Thibaut Courtois reportedly fell ill shortly before the highly anticipated encounter.
Despite the late change, the Ukrainian goalkeeper handled the pressure confidently and helped Real Madrid remain composed throughout the match.
Mourinho revealed that he spoke to Lunin before the game, encouraging him to trust his preparation and focus on performing rather than worrying about his position as a substitute.
“The only thing I told Lunin before the match was: ‘You train to play, not to sit on the bench. Go and play.’ He played a game with great balance and calmness,” Mourinho said.
The Portuguese manager also praised the unity and strength within the Real Madrid squad, insisting that Courtois’ absence did not unsettle the players.
“We have the best goalkeeper in the world, but today none of us cried before the match because Thibaut wasn’t playing. The group is strong, and the players are very united, even in the most difficult moments,” he added.
Mourinho further emphasised his message to Lunin before kick-off, reiterating the importance of being prepared to play whenever the opportunity arises.
“I went to Lunin and I told him: ‘You train to play, you don’t train to be on the bench.’”
Lunin’s performance earned him recognition after he was called upon unexpectedly to feature in one of football’s biggest fixtures.
His display also demonstrated Real Madrid’s depth in goal and the Ukrainian international’s readiness to deliver when given the opportunity.
