Chelsea have recorded the Premier League’s largest positive difference between goals scored and expected goals this season, with Morgan Rogers emerging as one of the key contributors to their impressive attacking numbers under manager Xabi Alonso.
A report by Football London on Wednesday, October 21, 2026, stated that the Blues have scored 17 goals in seven league matches, a total surpassed only by Manchester City and Brighton. Their scoring record reflects an effective attack, although the underlying statistics suggest that Chelsea have also benefited from exceptional finishing rather than chance creation alone.
Figures from WhoScored indicate that Chelsea have exceeded their expected goals (xG) by 5.22, the highest margin among Premier League clubs. Expected goals measure the likelihood of a particular scoring opportunity resulting in a goal, based on factors such as the position from which a shot is taken and the nature of the chance.
Rogers has been especially effective in front of goal. The Chelsea forward has scored four times from an expected goals total of 2.04, giving him a positive difference of 1.96. The figures underline his ability to convert opportunities that statistical models consider relatively difficult to score from.
His finishing quality was evident against Arsenal, when he produced a spectacular strike with an expected goals value of just 0.02, according to FotMob. The low figure illustrates how unlikely the opportunity was to result in a goal, making the finish particularly impressive.
Midfielder Jordan Henderson has also outperformed his expected goals numbers. He has scored twice this season, with both goals coming against Bournemouth, despite accumulating an xG total of only 0.36. His contribution further demonstrates Chelsea’s efficiency in taking advantage of limited opportunities.
The attacking combination of Rogers, Cole Palmer and Joao Pedro has provided Alonso with a promising frontline. Their performances have helped Chelsea maintain a strong scoring rate during the opening stages of the campaign.
Nevertheless, the team’s reliance on outstanding individual finishing raises questions about whether it can sustain the same level of production over the coming months. Alonso’s tactical approach remains under assessment, particularly regarding its ability to create high-quality chances consistently rather than depend on players converting difficult opportunities.
Chelsea’s current statistics suggest that their goal return could decline if their finishing efficiency becomes less exceptional. Even so, the team has shown encouraging progress in other areas.
The Blues secured their first Premier League clean sheet in nine months during last weekend’s victory over Everton. That defensive improvement offers Alonso further encouragement as he works to build a side capable of delivering consistent performances at both ends of the pitch.
