According to a report by the Evening Standard on Sunday, 18 October 2026, Chelsea have confirmed that goalkeeper Emi Martinez has undergone successful surgery on a fractured jaw after sustaining a serious head injury during their 2-0 Premier League victory over Everton.
The Argentine goalkeeper was taken to hospital after colliding with Everton defender Jarrad Branthwaite at the Hill Dickinson Stadium on Saturday.
The incident occurred midway through the second half, prompting medical staff to attend to both players. Martinez received treatment on the pitch for around 10 minutes before being stretchered off and transported to a nearby hospital for further examination.
Chelsea later confirmed that the 34-year-old had suffered a fractured jaw that required surgery, as well as concussion. However, the club reassured supporters that the injury had not caused serious brain damage.
A statement from Chelsea read: "Goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez has undergone successful surgery on a fractured jaw.
"Martinez was injured following a collision midway through the second half of our 2-0 victory over Everton at the Hill Dickinson Stadium on Saturday.
"Martinez was taken to hospital for further assessment, which confirmed a fractured jaw that required surgery.
"Everyone at Chelsea wishes Emi a speedy recovery and will support him throughout."
Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso had earlier revealed that Martinez was conscious when he left the stadium and was undergoing precautionary medical tests.
"As far as I know, he left the stadium conscious. Now he is in the hospital doing precautionary tests. Let’s see, but this is what I know so far," Alonso said.
Before his withdrawal, Martinez produced an impressive display, making two important saves as Chelsea recorded their first Premier League clean sheet since January.
Pedro Neto also dedicated the victory to the injured goalkeeper after scoring both goals for the Blues.
Martinez's absence could create difficulties for Alonso, with Chelsea already managing several injury concerns. Captain Reece James has undergone knee surgery, while Jamie Gittens and Emmanuel Emegha are also unavailable.
Although the club has confirmed that Martinez's operation was successful, the length of his recovery remains unclear. His return will depend on his progress following surgery and concussion, leaving Chelsea to evaluate their goalkeeping options in the coming weeks.
