According to a report by Barca Universal on Thursday, October 22, 2026, Barcelona reportedly believe former captain Sergio Busquets could eventually become the club’s first-team manager, with sporting director Deco and executive Bojan Krkic impressed by his football knowledge, leadership qualities and understanding of the club’s philosophy.
According to Catalunya Radio, Busquets’ early work with Barcelona Atletic has strengthened the club’s belief in his managerial potential, with the possibility of him taking charge of the senior team within five or six years reportedly being considered.
The former midfielder began his coaching career as an assistant to Juliano Belletti at Barcelona’s reserve team, where he is gaining valuable experience while helping young players develop within the club’s football system.
His early work in the coaching role has reportedly attracted positive attention, particularly from Deco, who has been impressed by Busquets’ tactical understanding, personality and clear ideas about how the game should be played.
Busquets is also understood to have an excellent understanding of Barcelona’s traditional playing philosophy, having spent several years representing the club at the highest level and working under respected managers during his successful playing career.
His experience and knowledge of positional football could provide a solid foundation for his transition into management, while his involvement with younger players offers an opportunity to develop his leadership and coaching abilities.
Barcelona reportedly view him as a potential candidate to manage the first team in approximately five or six years, provided he continues to make progress and demonstrates the qualities required for the role.
However, the former Spain international remains at the early stages of his coaching journey. He joined Belletti’s staff in August and is working towards completing his coaching qualifications while gaining practical experience.
Returning to familiar surroundings has allowed Busquets to learn the profession in an environment he understands, while Barcelona can monitor his development without placing unnecessary pressure on him.
For now, the possibility of managing the senior team remains a long-term prospect rather than an official succession plan. His progress in the coming years will determine whether he becomes a serious candidate.
Meanwhile, Barcelona remain under the management of Hansi Flick, while former midfielder Cesc Fabregas has also reportedly emerged as a potential successor to the German coach in the future.
