According to a report by Fabrizio Romano on Monday, October 19, 2026, Barcelona manager Hansi Flick has explained the risks and benefits of his team’s high defensive line, highlighting the importance of pressing quickly and maintaining proper distances between players.
Flick admitted that defending high up the pitch always carries risks, but he believes the approach can become a major strength when his players react correctly after losing possession.
“Our high defensive line Playing with a high defensive line is always a risk, but what matters is how we react and press when we lose possession, and how we maintain the distances between ourselves,” Flick said.
The German manager stressed that Barcelona’s defensive success depends on the entire team working together. He believes players must react quickly when possession changes hands and put pressure on opponents before they can exploit spaces behind the defence.
Flick also explained that the effectiveness of the system goes beyond the positioning of the defenders. Quick pressing, good organisation and proper movement across the pitch are all important in limiting the opposition’s attacking opportunities.
When Barcelona execute the system correctly, the high defensive line can help them control matches and maintain pressure on their opponents.
“If we do it properly, playing with a high line becomes a huge strength. We’ve only kept one clean sheet, but we’ve scored a lot of goals,” he added.
His comments highlight the difference between Barcelona’s attacking strength and their defensive record. While the team has scored plenty of goals, keeping opponents from finding the net remains a challenge, with just one clean sheet recorded.
Despite these concerns, Flick appears determined to continue using the approach. However, his players will need to improve their coordination and defensive discipline to reduce the risks involved.
Barcelona’s challenge will be to maintain their attacking threat while becoming more consistent defensively as the season progresses.
