Real Madrid face difficult task to land World Cup-winning defender despite strong interest

Real Madrid are reportedly facing significant obstacles in their attempt to sign Tottenham Hotspur right-back Pedro Porro, with the Spanish international unlikely to leave the London club during the January transfer window.

Tottenham are determined to retain the 27-year-old defender, whose long-term contract and positive relationship with manager Roberto De Zerbi have made a potential departure increasingly difficult. His situation has attracted attention from both Real Madrid and Barcelona as the Spanish rivals consider strengthening their options at right-back.

Real Madrid are particularly interested in improving the position, having yet to find a completely convincing solution. Trent Alexander-Arnold has reportedly struggled to establish himself as the club’s preferred option, while Denzel Dumfries is not considered an ideal long-term answer to their needs.

Consequently, Federico Valverde has been deployed at right-back to provide additional cover. Although the midfielder offers versatility, his use in the defensive position highlights Real Madrid’s desire to secure a more established specialist who can provide greater consistency.

However, Tottenham are in a strong position to resist interest in Porro. His current contract runs until 2031 and includes an option for a further year, giving the Premier League side considerable control over his future. Real Madrid would therefore face a difficult negotiating process if they decide to pursue a formal offer.

Porro is also reportedly settled in London and enjoys an excellent relationship with De Zerbi. The defender’s support for the manager during a challenging period at Tottenham has further strengthened the impression that he remains committed to the club.

Tottenham have experienced difficulties this season but have since moved away from the relegation zone. Porro’s continued involvement has been important as the team works to improve its position, and the club is unlikely to welcome the prospect of losing a key player midway through the campaign.

The defender has also received recognition from Tottenham for his achievements on the international stage. The club reportedly organised a guard of honour following his return after Spain’s World Cup triumph, reflecting the appreciation he enjoys among his teammates and the wider organisation.

Given his importance to the squad, Tottenham are expected to resist any attempt to sign him in January unless a substantial offer changes their position. His lengthy contract means the London club does not face immediate pressure to negotiate a sale.

Barcelona are also monitoring Porro’s circumstances, potentially creating further competition for Real Madrid if a transfer opportunity emerges. Both clubs are looking to strengthen their right-back options, but Tottenham’s determination to keep the defender presents a major obstacle.

For now, Real Madrid’s pursuit remains uncertain. Unless Tottenham become willing to consider a departure or receive an offer they regard as sufficiently attractive, Porro is expected to remain at the Premier League club beyond the January transfer window.
