Chelsea Eye Surprise Reece James Replacement Amid Ongoing Injury Concerns

Chelsea are reportedly keeping a close eye on Trent Alexander Arnold’s situation at Real Madrid as they consider strengthening their right back position ahead of the January transfer window.

According to a report by Football London on Friday, October 30, 2026, the England international could be open to leaving the Spanish giants after struggling to establish himself as a regular starter under manager José Mourinho.

The 28-year-old has reportedly started only four matches this season, raising concerns about his position in Madrid’s long term plans. His limited involvement has fuelled speculation about a possible departure from the Santiago Bernabéu, with a return to the Premier League emerging as one potential option.

Former Manchester United scout Mick Brown told Football Insider that Chelsea could offer Alexander-Arnold an opportunity to return to English football if he becomes available.

Brown suggested that the defender had been linked with the Stamford Bridge outfit, indicating that Chelsea could continue monitoring developments surrounding his future as the January transfer window approaches.

The Blues have a potential need to strengthen at right-back following another injury setback involving Reece James. The England defender is reportedly expected to remain unavailable until at least mid-January after undergoing surgery on a knee problem sustained during training.

Malo Gusto is likely to take responsibility at right-back while James recovers. However, Chelsea could decide that bringing in another experienced defender would provide greater depth and reduce the pressure on their existing options.

Alexander-Arnold could be an attractive target because of his attacking qualities and technical ability. The former Liverpool player is widely recognised for his exceptional passing range, accurate crossing and creativity from wide positions.

His experience and versatility could also offer Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso additional tactical options, particularly if he chooses to use the England international in a more advanced midfield role.

A return to Liverpool has also been discussed as a possible destination. However, Brown suggested that the circumstances surrounding Alexander-Arnold’s departure from Anfield could make such a move complicated.

For Chelsea, the opportunity to sign an experienced England international could become increasingly appealing if James continues to experience fitness problems.

Nevertheless, Alexander Arnold’s future remains uncertain, and any potential transfer will depend on his situation at Real Madrid and whether the Spanish club is prepared to consider offers when the January window opens.
