‘Biggest club in the world’ — Ajax talent Youri Baas responds to Barcelona transfer interest

Ajax defender Youri Baas has responded enthusiastically to speculation linking him with a possible transfer to Barcelona, describing the Spanish giants as the biggest football club in the world. The 23-year-old's comments have attracted attention as the Catalan side continues to consider potential defensive reinforcements ahead of the January transfer window.

Barcelona sporting director Deco is reportedly examining several options to strengthen the squad managed by Hansi Flick. Baas has emerged as one of the players being monitored, with his technical ability and capacity to perform in different defensive positions making him an attractive candidate for the Spanish champions.

Speaking to VoetbalPrimeur, in comments reported by SPORT, the Dutch international acknowledged that he had come across stories suggesting Barcelona were interested in signing him. However, he admitted that he did not know how the speculation had started or where the reports were coming from.

Baas explained that although he could not identify the source of the rumours, he had seen some of the stories and considered the attention encouraging. When asked specifically about the possibility of joining Barcelona, he made his admiration for the club clear, describing it as the biggest team in world football and calling the reported interest a huge compliment.

His reaction is likely to generate further discussion among Barcelona supporters, particularly because the club is actively considering ways to improve its defensive options. While the Dutch defender has not confirmed any negotiations, his positive comments suggest that he would view the possibility of playing for the Catalan giants favourably.

Baas is considered a suitable profile for Deco because of his ability to operate in more than one position. The Ajax player is naturally left-footed and is primarily capable of playing as a central defender or left-back. His comfort on the ball and technical quality also allow him to participate in building attacks from deeper areas.

These characteristics could make him particularly useful in Flick's system, which places significant importance on defenders who can contribute to possession and help the team progress the ball. Barcelona have traditionally favoured players who are comfortable receiving possession under pressure and distributing it accurately, making Baas's playing style potentially compatible with their approach.

Flick has also encountered difficulties with defensive selection in recent months, partly because of injury problems affecting members of his squad. The situation has increased the importance of identifying players who can provide dependable cover across several positions rather than being restricted to one specific role.

Baas's versatility could give the German manager additional flexibility when selecting his defence. His ability to play at centre-back and left-back would allow Barcelona to adjust their defensive arrangement according to the availability of other players and the demands of individual matches.

Nevertheless, Barcelona have not reportedly submitted a formal offer or taken concrete steps to complete a transfer. Deco and the club's recruitment team are still evaluating different defensive profiles before deciding which targets to pursue when the transfer window opens.

Meanwhile, Baas has continued to establish himself as an important member of Ajax's squad. He has made 16 appearances across competitions this season, scoring twice and providing one assist. His contributions demonstrate that he can offer something going forward in addition to his defensive responsibilities.

His positional flexibility was particularly noticeable during Ajax's 6-1 victory over FC Midtjylland. Manager Michel Sanchez deployed him in defensive midfield for the encounter before substituting him in the 70th minute. Although that is not his usual position, the decision demonstrated his ability to adapt to different tactical responsibilities.

Barcelona could, however, encounter competition from other clubs if they decide to pursue his signature. Teams from England and Germany are also reportedly following his development, potentially making the situation more complicated for the Spanish side.

Ajax are additionally in a strong negotiating position because Baas remains under contract until 2028. The Dutch club therefore have no immediate obligation to sell him and could demand a substantial transfer fee before considering any proposal.
