Real Madrid Closely Monitoring Premier League Goalkeeper As Potential Courtois Successor

According to a report by Madrid Universal on Sunday, November 1, 2026, Real Madrid have reportedly added Brighton and Hove Albion goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen to their list of potential long-term replacements for Thibaut Courtois as they begin planning for the future.

Courtois has been a reliable performer for Los Blancos over the years, producing consistently impressive displays and establishing himself among the leading goalkeepers in world football. However, with the Belgian now 34, Madrid have started considering their options for the years ahead.

According to journalist Ben Fernandes Santos, the Spanish giants are closely monitoring Verbruggen's development at Brighton, where the 24-year-old Netherlands international has impressed in the Premier League.

The goalkeeper recently produced an outstanding performance against Manchester City, making seven saves as Brighton secured a notable victory at the Etihad Stadium without conceding.

His display further strengthened his reputation as one of Europe's promising young goalkeepers and highlighted his progress under Brighton manager Fabian Hurzeler.

Verbruggen joined Brighton from Anderlecht in 2023 and has since established himself as the club's first-choice goalkeeper while also securing an important role in the Netherlands national team.

His sharp reflexes, composure under pressure and ability to distribute the ball accurately have made him an attractive option for clubs looking for a modern goalkeeper who can contribute beyond making saves.

Madrid have reportedly been following the Dutchman's progress for some time as they continue evaluating their options for the future of the goalkeeping position.

However, Courtois remains Mourinho's undisputed first choice between the posts. The Belgian's current contract runs until 2027, with discussions over a possible extension reportedly ongoing.

As long as Courtois continues performing at his current level, Madrid have little immediate need to replace him. Nevertheless, identifying potential successors early could help the club avoid difficulties when the time eventually comes to find a replacement.

Replacing Courtois would require more than signing a goalkeeper with impressive shot-stopping ability. Madrid would need someone capable of commanding the penalty area, handling pressure in major matches and delivering consistent performances at the highest level.

At 24, Verbruggen still has plenty of time to improve, although he may need to develop certain areas of his game before becoming a suitable successor to the Belgian.

If his performances continue to improve, interest from some of Europe's biggest clubs could grow considerably.

Although it remains uncertain whether Verbruggen will eventually become Madrid's first-choice goalkeeper, his growing reputation has reportedly placed him firmly on the Spanish club's radar as they plan for the future.
