Borussia Dortmund Attacking Midfielder Reportedly Wanted by NFF Follows Super Eagles on Instagram

According to a post shared on Soccernet's official X account on Friday, October 30, 2026, Borussia Dortmund attacking midfielder Ethan Nwaneri has reportedly followed the Super Eagles of Nigeria on Instagram, sparking fresh speculation about a possible change of international allegiance from England to Nigeria.

The 19-year-old Arsenal loanee's latest social media activity has attracted considerable attention among Nigerian football fans, particularly amid reports that the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) and Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle are interested in persuading him to represent Nigeria at senior international level.

According to the report, Nwaneri recently started following the Super Eagles' official Instagram account, further increasing speculation about his international future.

The young attacking midfielder is currently playing for German Bundesliga club Borussia Dortmund on loan from Arsenal after completing his move to the German side in September 2026. His loan agreement is expected to remain in place until the conclusion of the 2026/27 season.

Born in London on March 21, 2007, Nwaneri is eligible to represent Nigeria through his Nigerian father.

He has previously represented England at various youth levels, progressing from the Under-16 team to the Under-21 side. He was also part of the England squad that won the 2025 UEFA European Under-21 Championship.

Reports further suggest that Super Eagles coach Eric Chelle has already contacted the player's representatives as part of efforts to convince him to commit his international future to Nigeria, the three-time African champions.

Chelle reportedly considers Nwaneri an important potential addition to his attacking options because of his creativity, technical qualities and ability to operate in different positions in the final third.

Despite his involvement with England's youth national teams, the youngster has yet to make his senior international debut for the Three Lions.

As a result, a possible switch to Nigeria remains an option, provided he satisfies FIFA's eligibility requirements and other relevant conditions.

FIFA regulations permit eligible footballers to change their international allegiance under specific circumstances, although their previous appearances at senior level and the nature of those matches play an important role in determining eligibility.

Nevertheless, Nwaneri's decision to follow the Super Eagles on Instagram has added another development to the growing discussion about which country he could eventually represent at senior international level.
