No need to seek third term - Ghana and Kotoko legend Malik Jabir tells GFA president Kurt Okraku

Ghanaian football legend Malik Jabir has urged Ghana Football Association (GFA) president Kurt Okraku not to pursue a third term in office, arguing that his leadership should be judged by the trophies and achievements recorded during his tenure.

Jabir, a former Asante Kotoko player and coach, expressed concern about the decision to extend the presidential term limit, insisting that football administrators should focus on delivering results rather than prolonging their stay in office.

Speaking in an interview with Angel FM, the veteran football figure questioned the rationale behind changing the GFA’s constitutional provisions to allow presidents to serve three terms instead of two.

“What third term? Look, any association that keeps changing its term of office means maybe we are not too serious,” he said.

Okraku became GFA president in 2019 and secured a second term in 2023. He could contest the 2027 presidential election following a constitutional amendment approved at the association’s 2025 Congress.

The amendment increased the presidential term limit from two four-year terms to three, making Okraku eligible to seek another mandate. However, he has not confirmed whether he intends to contest.

Jabir argued that the performance of Ghana’s national teams should be a major consideration when assessing the GFA president’s leadership.

According to him, Okraku might have enjoyed stronger support for another term if Ghana had won the major trophies expected during his administration.

“I tell you, if Okraku had won all the cups we need by now, I don’t think anybody would want him to go,” Jabir stated.

He also expressed frustration over Ghana’s inability to secure major silverware, questioning the effectiveness of repeated changes to the technical teams of the national sides.

“But he hasn’t won even one. Even sometimes it’s difficult to beat a team with seven coaches. What are we waiting for?” he added.

The debate over Okraku’s potential third term is expected to intensify as stakeholders assess his administration’s record, the constitutional amendment and the future direction of Ghanaian football ahead of the 2027 GFA presidential election.
