Eagles first-half takeaways: Five sacks fuel 8-6 lead over Giants

The Eagles finally found a pass rush, carrying them into halftime with an 8-6 lead over the Giants on Sunday at Lincoln Financial Field. Philadelphia sacked J.J. McCarthy five times, limited New York to 87 total yards and repeatedly gave an offense adjusting to Joe Milton opportunities to build on a narrow advantage.

The offense could not fully capitalize, producing 121 total yards and one touchdown while losing a fumble and failing on a fourth-and-short attempt. Still, Philadelphia entered the locker room ahead behind Saquon Barkley’s 3-yard touchdown run and Milton’s ensuing two-point conversion. Here are the biggest takeaways from the opening half.

Zack Baun leads a long-awaited pass-rush breakthrough

Philadelphia entered Sunday with 10 sacks through eight games and collected half that total in two quarters. Baun led the charge with two sacks, six tackles and three tackles for loss, while Jonathan Greenard, Jalen Carter and Jordan Davis each added a sack.

The pressure changed the complexion of New York’s offense after its opening two possessions produced field goals. McCarthy completed 9 of 13 passes for 101 yards, but the Giants lost 29 yards on sacks. Philadelphia’s ability to finish those plays prevented New York from turning an efficient passing line into sustained production.

Eagles shut down the Giants’ running game

New York managed 15 yards on 10 rushing attempts, with Devin Singletary gaining nine yards on six carries. That imbalance allowed Philadelphia to attack the quarterback rather than consistently defend favorable down-and-distance situations.

The defensive performance also helped contain Malik Nabers, who finished the half with two receptions for 25 yards. Isaiah Likely led New York with four catches for 48 yards, but the Giants generated only four first downs.

Saquon Barkley finishes the Eagles’ best possession

Barkley’s 3-yard touchdown capped an eight-play, 58-yard drive that supplied all of Philadelphia’s first-half points. Milton extended the possession with his mobility, and a pass-interference penalty on Darius Cooper moved the Eagles into scoring position.

After New York committed a penalty on the extra-point attempt, Philadelphia elected to go for two. Milton converted from the 1-yard line, giving the Eagles an 8-6 lead. Barkley found little room otherwise, finishing with 22 yards on 10 carries.

Eagles leave opportunities on the field

Rocco Underwood recovered Charlie Jones’ punt-return fumble, but Philadelphia quickly surrendered possession when Arvell Reese strip-sacked Milton. A later drive ended with a failed fourth-and-1 attempt from shotgun at New York’s 40-yard line.

Field position complicated matters, but the Eagles also added four penalties for 41 yards. Their defense delivered a winning half; the offense must provide more support after intermission.
