Michael Carrick has been granted a stay of execution by Manchester United.
The United head coach will be given the chance to arrest the club’s shocking slide after the Old Trafford hierarchy opted against making another managerial change on Tuesday.
Telegraph Sport reported on Tuesday morning that Carrick had taken training and was planning for Saturday’s trip to Chelsea.
United sources have now confirmed Carrick will remain in charge, at least for now, and be given the chance to oversee a response at Stamford Bridge on Saturday lunchtime after the club’s worst start to a season for 40 years.
Carrick remains under huge pressure and the Old Trafford hierarchy are expected to keep working on succession plans and contingencies behind the scenes in the event the head coach cannot stop the rot.
Eddie Howe, the former Newcastle manager, and Julian Nagelsmann, the former Bayern Munich and Germany head coach, have been among the front runners to replace Carrick although the club are sticking by their embattled manager for the time being.
