Two months into the new Championship season, there are a number of teams who look to be in serious danger of relegation.

It has been a bleak start to the season for Preston North End, who currently sit bottom of the Championship with just four points from their first 11 games, and the Lilywhites are joined by some unexpected strugglers in the lower reaches of the table.

Derby County, Burnley and Norwich City were tipped to challenge for promotion this season by many, but the trio find themselves just above Preston as things stand, with John Eustace, Nicky Hayen and Philippe Clement all under increasing pressure.

Watford, Cardiff City and Lincoln City are also too close to the relegation zone to comfort, while Charlton Athletic complete the bottom eight after an eight-game winless run which has seen them drop to 17th following a promising start to the season.

Of course, there is a long way to go in the season and plenty of time for things to change, but, based on the early evidence, we asked ChatGPT to predict who the bottom eight in the Championship will be at the end of the campaign.

17th - Portsmouth

Despite being involved in relegation battles in each of their two seasons back in the Championship, Portsmouth have managed to avoid the drop on both occasions.

Pompey were able to keep hold of head coach John Mousinho this summer amid interest from Bristol City, but after another underwhelming transfer window, it looks like another season of struggle could be on the cards at Fratton Park.

Victories over Sheffield United and Norwich in their last two games have moved Portsmouth six points clear of the relegation zone, but with the squad lacking depth and quality in certain areas, it will be tough for them to sustain their current momentum.

ChatGPT believes that Pompey will be able to secure their Championship status once again this season, but it admitted that they may struggle for consistency away from home, which will prevent them from making progress up the table.

18th - Wrexham

Phil Parkinson

After achieving a historic three consecutive promotions from the National League to the Championship, Wrexham's first year back in the second tier ended in heartbreak last season as they missed out on the play-offs on the final day.

Having spent big in the summer on the likes of Anthony Patterson, Danny Imray, Jacques Ekomie, Ben Whiteman and Callum O'Hare, the Red Dragons would have been expecting to be in promotion contention again this season.

However, a mixed start to the season has seen manager Phil Parkinson come under pressure, with reports claiming that Wrexham are considering Steven Gerrard and Scott Parker as potential replacements, but the 4-1 home victory over Preston on Saturday looks to have earned the 58-year-old more time.

Unfortunately for Parkinson, ChatGPT is not convinced that he will be able to mastermind another promotion push this season, predicting that the Red Dragons will finish in 18th place.

19th - Cardiff City

Cardiff made an immediate return to the Championship last season after finishing second in League One with a total of 91 points.

The Bluebirds have adapted well to life back in the second tier, but despite putting in a number of impressive performances, their failure to convert their chances means they have won just two of their opening 11 games, leaving them 19th in the table.

Having had a relatively kind fixture list so far, Cardiff emerged with plenty of credit from arguably their toughest test of the season as they drew 2-2 with second-placed Middlesbrough at the Riverside Stadium on Saturday, and head coach Brian Barry-Murphy will be hoping to see a similar level of fight from his side in their upcoming games.

ChatGPT believes that the Bluebirds will remain clear of any relegation danger this season, but it warned that they could be pulled into a dogfight if their inconsistency continues.

20th - Norwich City

Philippe Clement

Norwich were languishing in the relegation zone when Philippe Clement arrived at Carrow Road in November, but they eventually finished ninth in the Championship last season after a stunning second half of the campaign.

With that in mind, many tipped the Canaries to finish in the play-offs this season, and some even suggested they could challenge for automatic promotion, but they have failed to live up to expectations so far.

Norwich currently sit 21st in the table, just one point clear of the relegation zone, after winning just three of their first 11 games, and they suffered their fifth consecutive league defeat as they were beaten 1-0 at home by Portsmouth on Saturday to pile the pressure on Clement.

With the season still in the early stages, the Canaries will be hopeful that they can rescue their campaign and climb the table, and ChatGPT admits that they have enough quality to survive, but it has predicted them to finish in a disappointing 20th place.

21st - Lincoln City

Chris Cohen and Tom Shaw

Just weeks after winning the League One title last season and securing a return to the second tier of English football for the first time in 65 years, Lincoln lost head coach Michael Skubala to Bristol City.

The Imps promoted coaches Chris Cohen and Tom Shaw to the role of joint managers after Skubala's departure, and while the bold appointment of the pair raised a few eyebrows, it looks to have been a shrewd move.

Lincoln have been incredibly competitive in the Championship so far this season, picking up away victories over Bolton Wanderers, Preston North End and Bristol City, but their current four-game winless run has dragged them towards the relegation zone.

The Imps were beaten 6-0 by West Ham United at Sincil Bank last week in a game which saw them reduced to nine men early in the first half, but while ChatGPT claimed that their defensive vulnerabilities are a worry, it has backed them to avoid relegation.

22nd - Watford

Alessio Dionisi, Watford

While there is never a dull moment at Vicarage Road, it has been a particularly eventful start to the season for Watford.

After rattling through another three managers last season, the Hornets appointed Alessio Dionisi as their new head coach in the summer, but it was claimed that they were preparing to part company with the Italian last week after back-to-back heavy defeats against Burnley and Cardiff.

Later reports revealed that Watford were keen to give Dionisi more time to turn his side's fortunes around, and the 46-year-old bought himself some much-needed breathing space with a 2-0 victory over Charlton on Saturday, but it remains to be seen whether his respite will be short-lived.

As Hornets supporters step up protest action against owner Gino Pozzo, the atmosphere around the club is becoming increasingly strained, and ChatGPT believes their turbulent season will end in relegation from the Championship.

23rd - Derby County

John Eustace, Derby County

After missing out on the play-offs on the final day of last season, Derby were widely expected to mount another promotion challenge this time around, but it has certainly not worked out that way so far.

The Rams have won just one of their first 11 games this season, and they are currently 23rd in the table, three points from safety, following a 1-0 defeat to Stoke City at Pride Park on Saturday that extended their winless run to seven games.

Increasing numbers of Derby supporters have called for head coach John Eustace to be sacked in recent weeks, but owner David Clowes looks set to remain patient with the 46-year-old for now at least.

Having also started last season poorly, Clowes will be hoping that Eustace can lead the Rams up the table over the coming months, but ChatGPT has predicted that they will be relegated to League One, pointing to their lengthy injury list as a big cause for concern.

24th - Preston North End

Graham Alexander

Preston became the first side in the Championship to make a managerial change this season when they sacked Paul Heckingbottom last month following a run of six defeats from their first seven games.

The Lilywhites brought club legend Graham Alexander back to Deepdale to replace Heckingbottom, with the 55-year-old opting to leave his role at Bradford City to return to Lancashire, despite the Bantams sitting top of League One at the time of his exit.

However, it is fair to say that the appointment has not had the desired effect so far, with Alexander losing all of his first three games in charge against Millwall, Birmingham City and Wrexham, which has left North End five points from safety.

Alexander also made a slow start to his reign at Bradford before delivering remarkable success at Valley Parade, but AI does not believe that a similar pattern will follow at his new club, predicting that Preston will finish bottom of the table.
