Teddy Wilson’s whirlwind few days from Australia A omission to Wallabies

Teddy Wilson was a surprise omission from the Australia A squad to face a USA XV, but it was business as usual for the NSW Waratahs scrum-half the following Monday, returning to Tahs HQ “still hoping” for higher honours.

Nathan Hastie and Kalani Thomas instead looked ahead to matches in Nashville and New Jersey. Thomas has been a consistent Wallabies squad member since getting a run against France during the 2025 Autumn Nations Series, and even featured in Bledisloe II against the All Blacks.

But when the Wallabies squad for the November Nations Championship Tests was named, Wilson had been brought into the mix. The 23-year-old had been left out of the Australia A plans for a reason, with Wallabies coach Les Kiss the one making the call.

Wilson had been running around at Waratahs training on the Monday when his phone rang, and it was the Wallabies boss on the other end.  “It was very special,” the uncapped prospect said, with news of the selection going public on Friday afternoon.

“It’s a special moment for myself and my family. Playing rugby in Australia, growing up this is definitely the team that you want to play for and aspire to get into,” Wilson told reporters at Easts Rugby Club.

“It’s a special moment for myself.”

Wilson has long been held in high regard within Australian rugby circles, even captaining the U20 side at the World Rugby Junior World Championship in 2023. It didn’t take long for the halfback to become a Waratahs regular in the Super Rugby Pacific seasons that followed.

Jake Gordon continued to hold down the fort as a regular member of the starting XV, but Wilson still made 14 appearances in Tahs colours. Wilson went on to help Easts win the coveted Shute Shield crown and played big minutes during the second edition of Super Rugby AUS.

“I haven’t felt the pressure of that type of stuff,” Wilson said.

“I just focus on what I can control. That’s my performances each week. If it’s playing for Easts, if it’s playing for the Waratahs, whoever it may be, I just focus on that week to week and let the other stuff take control of itself.”

Wilson stepped up late in the Shute Shield season, helping guide the Beasties towards another Shute Shield title. Tahs teammate Sid Harvey was central to that success too, wearing the red, white and blue strip once Super Rugby Pacific commitments were over.

Almost two months on from the 31-15 win over Warringah, Wilson was back at Easts Rugby Club – this time wearing a Wallabies polo. Wilson had been at the ground late last week too, supporting brother Harry Wilson and the Australia Sevens teams.

Harry Wilson (not to be mistaken for his Wallabies namesake) featured against Fiji in the inaugural Kick On 7s, as the Aussies prepare for the HSBC SVNS Series, which gets underway next month with the Dubai Sevens.

“It’s definitely a special moment for our family,” he added.

“We’re super grateful to be in this position.”

When the SVNS Series season opener wraps up, the Wallabies will have just played their final Test of the season. Wilson could potentially line up against England, Scotland, Wales or a to-be-determined opponent in the Nations Championship Finals Weekend.
