Rohit Sharma produced a moment of brilliance on the field to give India a much-needed breakthrough against New Zealand in the first ODI of the five-match series. The former India captain showcased his sharp reflexes and awareness to run out dangerous batter Daryl Mitchell, ending a potentially threatening partnership in the series opener at Eden park, Auckland.
The dismissal came during the 21st over, when Axar Patel was bowling to Glenn Phillips. Mitchell nudged the ball towards the leg side and initially looked comfortable taking a quick single. However, a moment of hesitation between the two New Zealand batters allowed Rohit to turn the situation in India’s favour.
Stationed at mid-wicket, Rohit reacted quickly, charged towards the ball and collected it before delivering a superb underarm throw towards the stumps. Wicketkeeper KL Rahul completed the job with lightning-fast glovework, catching Mitchell short of his crease.
The Indian players immediately celebrated the breakthrough, while the crowd erupted following Rohit’s excellent piece of fielding.

Mitchell was dismissed for 28 off 41 deliveries, including three boundaries and a six. While it was not a particularly big score, his wicket was extremely valuable for India given his recent ODI record. Also, the New Zealand batter registered four centuries and two half-centuries in his previous seven innings against the Indian team.
India produced an impressive bowling performance to dismiss New Zealand for 185 in the first ODI.
After winning the toss and electing to bowl, the visitors kept the hosts under pressure with regular breakthroughs. Arshdeep Singh led the attack with four wickets in his 10 overs, while Gurnoor Brar picked up two wickets. Tim Seifert offered some resistance with 38 off 43 deliveries, including three fours and two sixes. However, New Zealand struggled to build partnerships as India’s bowlers made good use of the conditions.
New Zealand continued losing wickets at regular intervals, leaving their lower order with plenty of work to do. Blair Tickner provided some late entertainment with an attacking 34 off 23 balls, helping the hosts add valuable runs alongside Jacob Duffy. Their final-wicket partnership of 39 runs gave New Zealand a small boost before Brar dismissed Tickner to bring the innings to an end. The hosts were eventually bowled out in 40.2 overs, setting India a target of 186 runs to win the opening match.
India’s bowlers would be pleased with their disciplined effort, while the batting lineup, featuring Rohit, Virat Kohli and captain Shubman Gill, will now look to complete the chase and give the visitors an early lead in the five-match leg.
