Didier Deschamps has emerged as another name in Manchester United’s managerial conversation as Michael Carrick finds himself fighting to rescue a season rapidly spiralling out of control.
Carrick’s appointment initially looked inspired, with the former United midfielder guiding the club to a third-place Premier League finish last season after replacing Ruben Amorim.
However, that optimism has disappeared following a disastrous start to the new campaign.
United have managed just two victories in their opening 11 competitive fixtures, with their only successes coming against Ipswich Town and Sabah FK.
Wednesday’s humiliating 4-1 Champions League defeat against Como extended their winless run to seven matches, with Nico Paz scoring twice as Cesc Fabregas’ side dismantled United in Italy.
Captain Bruno Fernandes subsequently questioned the team’s approach without possession, adding to the growing scrutiny surrounding Carrick’s tactical decisions.
The club are now identifying potential successors, with Antonio Conte, Julian Nagelsmann and Eddie Howe among those discussed. Unai Emery and Fabian Hurzeler have also attracted interest.
Meanwhile, the managerial market has gained another fascinating possibility following a major change within international football.
According to French publication Football.fr, Deschamps features prominently among the potential candidates to replace Carrick.
The Frenchman is available after ending his 14-year spell managing France following the 2026 World Cup, with former teammate Zinedine Zidane taking over.
Deschamps guided France to World Cup glory in 2018, having previously captained the country to the same trophy in 1998.
His managerial credentials extend beyond international football. He took Monaco to the 2004 Champions League final, restored Juventus to Serie A following their relegation and delivered Marseille’s first league title in 18 years.
However, the 58-year-old is reportedly reluctant to rush back into management, having already rejected a lucrative three-year proposal from Saudi Arabian club Al-Ahli.
Football.fr suggests Deschamps would only accept a project that genuinely appeals to his sporting ambitions.
United could present such an opportunity, although there is currently no confirmation of formal negotiations or an approach from the club.
Carrick, meanwhile, will remain in charge against Bournemouth on Sunday, with his future beyond that fixture increasingly uncertain.
