After five years under Eddie Howe, eight points in Newcastle's opening five Premier League games was not a bad start for Matthias Jaissle.
But the signs were there from the start at Coventry on Monday that the Magpies lacked a solid defensive base and those weaknesses were put on show by a ruthless attacking display from the Sky Blues.
After Lukas Hornicek's early mistake to give away the penalty, Newcastle were left to chase the game and left acres of space for Coventry to counter-attack into.
Sidiki Cherif was afforded too much time on the ball before he netted the hosts' second, while Joelinton sloppily lost possession as he launched into a tackle before Ellis Simms found the target.
It did not help that Newcastle wasted the numerous chances they had in front of goal.
Matias Fernandez-Pardo had a golden opportunity to tap in an equaliser in the first half from close range, but dummied Jacob Murphy's pass and there was no-one arriving behind to convert.
And the Belgian was not clinical or fast enough to find a way past Thomas later on.
Jaissle will no doubt be asked about possible solutions when he faces the media today before his team host Aston Villa in the Premier League on Saturday (17:30 BST).
Liverpool boss Andoni Iraola on Rio Ngumoha's start on the right wing against LASK:
"I think he is getting more comfortable there. I think with England he had some good moments, playing on the right side.
"Also, he has to adapt sometimes.
"I feel he is a threat every time he gets on the ball and he cannot lose this, doesn't matter if it is on the right, on the left. We want him to be brave when he has the ball. After that, there are a lot of areas he needs to improve.
"I am liking his attitude because he is ready to do it and in a young player that is key."
More from Liverpool manager Andoni Iraola after Wednesday's victory against LASK: I'm very happy with the performance. Today I think we were very aggressive with the ball, sometimes you talk about aggressiveness without the ball but I'm talking about with the ball. I think we took good positions, we moved the ball well, attacked the spaces well. We conceded those goals, but overall I think the performance was very good."
On the defensive struggles in the second half: "Probably the reason why the manager shouldn't change both centre backs, but we were already winning 4-0 and you have to think about the next game and saving the legs of the players. We didn't defend properly at the end of the game."
On Florian Wirtz's impact: "I think he was amazing in possession. I think he had lively passes, good assists, he helped us to control the game. Especially in the first half where he was roaming around and finding good spots. It was a good game from Florian.
On Lewis Koumas: "He has to enjoy it because he deserves it. I think he scored two disallowed goals which is unlucky for him but he kept pressing, making the runs in behind and doing his job. I think it's fair that he score his goal and can have his moment of celebration with the supporters."
Was that Aston Villa's best performance of the season so far?
6-0 in the Champions League - sounds good doesn't it?
Unai Emery's side were ruthless in front of goal against Fenerbahce, producing a display that shows just how dangerous they can be when everything comes together.
Villa have had a mixed start to their Premier League campaign, but their attacking form has since turned a corner.
After scoring just once across their first four games of the season, including against Paris St-Germain in the Super Cup, they have since scored three or more goals in four of their six matches.
In fact, no Premier League side has scored more goals than Villa since this run began on 8 September, with their 18 goals putting them level with Manchester City.
Their European home form is equally impressive. Villa have won 18 of their past 20 home games in major European competition, drawing one and losing one.
They are also on a joint-longest active home winning streak in these competitions, with 11 consecutive victories alongside Freiburg.
Villa will be hoping to carry that form into Saturday's Premier League trip to Newcastle, who head into the weekend after losing at Coventry City.
Champions League
The 78 goals scored across Tuesday and Wednesday's games this week is the most ever on a regular matchday in the Champions League since the new league phase format began in 2024-25.
This beats the 71 goals scored in matchday three of the league phase last season.
Is there something about the new format that releases the shackles in the opening rounds?
More exhibits to back up that argument are coming your way, ready for the second helping?
