Vesti confirms he is in the running for a 2027 Formula 1 seat

Frederik Vesti has set his sights on a Formula 1 seat with Cadillac. The Dane, who replaced George Russell during FP1 in Mexico, believes his appearance came at the perfect time. Earlier this week, GPblog reported that he is being considered as a possible successor to Valtteri Bottas.

Vesti finished his practice session for Mercedes in third place and made clear afterward how much he wants to secure a permanent spot on the grid. Now that his name is being linked with Cadillac, a performance like this gives him the chance to make an impression. “The timing couldn't be better, to be honest,” Vesti began.

"There is discussions about a seat, and, I've got my eyes on that seat. I believe I would be very, very good in that car, and to be in Formula 1 has been my goal ever since I started driving. So I'm more motivated than ever, and I'm extremely hungry to make it onto the grid."

Vesti in the running as a possible Bottas replacement

GPblog has previously learned earlier that Vesti is an option if Cadillac decides not to continue with Bottas. Colton Herta is also in contention for the seat.

Vesti also has a connection with the American manufacturer: he races for Cadillac Whelen in IMSA and is set to compete in a full season alongside Jack Aitken in 2027. Meanwhile, his ambition to reach Formula 1 remains undiminished. No decision on a move has been made yet.

During FP1, Vesti also had to complete Mercedes’ test programme. The team is working to better understand the W17’s recent upgrade package and relied on feedback from its third driver.

He could then do some laps on soft tyres, which he really enjoyed. "Actually putting down a good lap is a very, very big privilege and, yeah, it makes me happy. It shows the trust that the whole team has in me that I've built over the years. For me to be put on a soft tyre, you know, that's quite rare for a rookie. I've had other sessions where I was on a hard tyre doing aero work all session, not being able to show what I'm capable of. So, yeah, real privilege to drive this car here in Mexico."

Mercedes delighted with Vesti

After the session, Vesti received praise from Mercedes. Deputy team principal Bradley Lord called it one of the Dane's best sessions ever. With George Russell still having to sit out an FP1 session later on this year, Vesti will return at some point as well. Lord named Abu Dhabi as the most likely possibility.
