Iga Swiatek’s physiotherapist, Maciej Ryszczuk, recently hit back at a critic on social media who accused him of pushing the Polish star to continue playing despite her injury at the Wuhan Open.

Swiatek’s campaign ended in the semifinals after she suffered a left-leg injury and lost in straight sets to her compatriot and childhood friend, Maja Chwalinska. Swiatek initially led 5-3 in the first set and earned two set points. However, Chwalinska fought back to take a 6-5 lead.

Swiatek subsequently called for a medical timeout to address a painful left-thigh injury. She appeared visibly distressed and broke down in tears on the court. During the match, she also consulted Ryszczuk, who reportedly advised her to prioritize her health and consider stopping if she could no longer cope with the physical strain. Despite the advice, the former World No. 1 chose to continue playing.

Shortly after the defeat, a user on X questioned Ryszczuk’s role in the situation, writing in a post translated from Polish:

“Aha mr maciej why are you pushing it…” (translated from Polish)

Ryszczuk responded firmly, denying the accusation and clarifying that he had urged Swiatek to stop playing but ultimately supported her decision to continue.

“Please stop talking nonsense, I told her three times to stop the match because it’s bad for her health. She made the decision herself to continue playing, and since she made that one, I support her as much as I can.” (translated from Polish)

Despite the reported injury setback, Iga Swiatek reached a historic milestone earlier in the tournament. Her quarterfinal victory over Ann Li made her the first active player to reach the semifinals at all 10 current WTA 1000 tournaments, according to reports.

What did Iga Swiatek’s physio tell her about continuing at the Wuhan Open?

During the opening game of the second set, Iga Swiatek appeared visibly distressed and turned to her team in tears. Ryszczuk reportedly advised her to consider retiring from the match while also explaining the option of taking painkillers if she wanted to try to continue.

“You can take two more paracetamols if you want. If you want, you can try 3 times, play with kick and hit the first ball. And if not then end it, there is no sense to continue. We have time so you can recover,” said Swiatek’s physio. (translated from Polish by a user on X)

Iga Swiatek is scheduled to compete next at the Ningbo Open and will be opening her tournament on Wednesday.
