Steven Gerrard 'open' to return to management with struggling EFL club

Steven Gerrard has been linked with one of the biggest jobs in the EFL amid rumours he could soon return to management.

It's now been nearly two years since Premier League legend Gerrard last worked as a manager after he left Saudi Arabian side Al-Ettifaq by mutual consent in January 2025.

Other than Al-Ettifaq, Gerrard has worked both Rangers and Aston Villa and it appears he may be looking to return to work with another British club as new reports are suggesting he is open to replacing Phil Parkinson at Wrexham.

Steven Gerrard open to replacing Phil Parkinson at Wrexham amid sack rumours

For more than five years, Parkinson has led Wrexham from a small Welsh club playing in the National League all the way up to the Championship, becoming a household name in the process partly due to the big Hollywood takeover from actors Rob Mac and Ryan Reynolds.

Despite this, Parkinson now faces major pressure over his role as manager after Wrexham's disappointing start to the season sees them sitting 17th in the table ahead of a must-win match against Preston on Saturday.

Having won only two of their 10 matches this season, should Wrexham also fail to get a win over Preston then it could well end up being Parkinson's last game in charge of the club, with Gerrard reportedly ready to step in as his replacement should he be called upon.

As per TalkSPORT, Gerrard is one of the names being considered by sporting director Steve Nickson, with the Liverpool legend believed to be 'open' to taking the Wrexham job.

Since leading Rangers to an unbeaten Scottish Premiership title in 2020/21, Gerrard's managerial career has been relatively challenging, having been sacked after 11 months at Aston Villa and the leaving Al-Ettifaq after a disappointing 18-month spell.

But now that he's had some time away from pitch, it stands to reason that Gerrard may finally feel like it's time to return to the dugout, with Wrexham potentially offering a chance to work with a massive club.

Steven Gerrard addresses managerial future amid Wrexham links

Just weeks before links between Gerrard and Wrexham started to emerge, the 46-year-old spoke about his time as a manager and any plans of returning to work with another club.

Speaking on the Overlap Daily, he admitted that he maybe should have got more managerial experience working at Aston Villa, but didn't regret the decision to take work in the Premier League so early in his coaching career.

That being said, he admitted he was enjoying his time away from the pitch, but didn't rule out that he could soon return to the dugout if the right opportunity came up.

"I look better though, don't I? No stress, the grey hairs have slowed down. My work-life balance at the moment is very good. I'm really happy where I am right now. Don't want to be anywhere else," Gerrard said in the latest episode of the Overlap Daily, brought to you by Sky Bet

"But even if I was in a job now and I'd come in to do this as a one-off, I wouldn't shut a media door or any door. I'm always someone who never shuts a door, keep everything open and live in the moment.

"I don't know what the future holds in a year, two, three or four, but I've signed up to this and I'm really excited about it."

Speaking more about his time as a manager, he added: "It's not easy being a coach. It's not easy. It's a tough job. It's a different role from being a player.

"Different pressures, different stress. It's around the clock, and that's what people need to be aware of when they decide to go down the coaching career. It's a completely different gig."
