Ranking every SEC football team from 1 to 16 isn't easy. It never is, but it's especially hard now. Week 7 brought chaos as No. 1 Georgia fell to Auburn, Texas was upset by Florida, Kentucky won as an underdog (again), and Tennessee's defense dominated Alabama on the Third Saturday in October.
Despite the challenge, it's time for some SEC football power rankings. I'll go ahead and spoil the list: Georgia is still No. 1. Despite UGA's loss to Auburn, no other team has made a strong enough case for the top spot. Georgia still projects to be the best team in this league moving forward.
If we've learned anything this year, it's not to overreact to one week of games. Teams can be on top of the world one week, only to be brought back to reality the next.
Tennessee risks falling into that trap this week. After the massive Alabama win, Tennessee is an underdog at South Carolina in Week 8. It just shows the depth of this league. Anyway, here are LSU Wire's updated SEC power rankings.
We have a new team in last place. Vanderbilt and Arkansas met in Week 7, both entering the game without an SEC win. Something had to give, and Arkansas earned its first SEC win, while Vanderbilt remained winless in conference play. Vanderbilt's 2026 is a stark contrast to the highs of 2024 and 2025. That wasn't unexpected as Vanderbilt rebuilds after star quarterback Diego Pavia left. Still, there's hope for the future as five-star freshman QB Jared Curtis flashes talent.
Arkansas' win over Vandy means the Razorbacks get to leave last place behind, at least for now. The win ended a 14-game SEC losing streak. Arkansas benefited from a couple of turnovers, including a pick-six, and went 9 of 17 on late downs. The ground game did enough, with Ryan Silverfield's team totaling 187 rushing yards. Arkansas gets a bye week before hosting Missouri on Oct. 31.
Mississippi State's 2026 season looked promising a few weeks ago, but after blowout losses to Alabama and LSU, the Bulldogs' lofty dreams are no longer on the table. Kamario Taylor's lingering turf toe has upended Mississippi State's season; however, the Bulldogs have some winnable games on the schedule, beginning with hosting Oklahoma this weekend. If MSU can find a few more wins, they'll still finish above where the preseason projection suggested.
Texas A&M was happy to face an FCS team in Week 7 given how SEC play has gone for Mike Elko's squad. Texas A&M began the year with playoff hopes, but the offense has sputtered, and transfer portal additions on defense haven't produced as needed. Texas A&M isn't a top-10 team in the SEC right now, which is disappointing for Aggie fans given how much was spent on this roster.
South Carolina got off the mat with a win over Florida in Week 6. It was a much-needed win for a struggling Gamecocks team. South Carolina was on bye last week and will host Tennessee in Week 8. Shane Beamer's Gamecocks are actually the betting favorite vs. the Vols. South Carolina has a chance to make a statement vs. a Tennessee team riding high after beating Alabama. If South Carolina can get the job done, suddenly the picture of this season looks different.
Auburn showed something in its upset of No. 1 Georgia. It was a signature moment for head coach Alex Golesh in year one. Auburn forced three turnovers and capitalized on Georgia penalties. Good teams seize on chances like that, but Auburn can't count on that every week. The game didn't change my opinion of Auburn. The offense doesn't have much of a traditional passing game, but the OL is getting better, and the QB run game is dangerous. Playmakers on defense give Auburn a chance, but the Tigers have given up a lot of yards in some spots, too.
Kentucky is 6-1 after winning as an underdog again. Will Stein's Wildcats just keep figuring out ways to win football games. Kentucky is a playoff contender, but I find it hard to justify putting UK higher. Kentucky's turnover margin is unsustainable, and eventually, Kentucky will get some unlucky bounces. This team plays complementary football and knows how to hang in games, though, which gives Kentucky a chance vs. anyone.
The air was let out of the Missouri balloon in Week 7 as the Tigers were smoked in Oxford. Missouri went in looking to solidify itself as a College Football Playoff contender, but Eli Drinkwitz's crew did anything but. Missouri was dominated in the trenches on both sides of the ball, and QB Austin Simmons didn't have many solutions, either. Missouri gets a bye to work things out before traveling to Arkansas, which should be a winnable game.
Oklahoma's offense isn't good. The defense is elite, though, and that's enough to put Oklahoma middle of the pack in the SEC. OU beat Texas in Week 6, then turned around and lost to Kentucky in Week 7. Oklahoma threw three interceptions and took five sacks vs. the Wildcats. That allowed Kentucky to win, despite Oklahoma outgaining them.
Florida beat Texas in Week 7, but it wasn't enough to forgive its blowout home loss to South Carolina. When this Florida team shows up, it's really good. But the Gators are inconsistent, and when they're bad, they're bad. Florida has talent at running back and wide receiver, but questions remain at QB, and the offensive line is up and down. Power ratings still like the Gators, with TeamRankings slotting UF No. 16 in the nation.
Things aren't going well in Austin right now. After losing to Florida, Texas is 4-2 and on the brink of missing the College Football Playoff. Texas' season is on the line when it hosts Ole Miss this week. If Texas wins, it gets another top-10 win and is back in the hunt. But a loss, and the season is basically over. Texas began the year with sky-high expectations, and if it misses the playoff, head coach Steve Sarkisian will be on the hot seat.
Tennessee's defense dominated in its two-score win over Alabama. Jim Knowles' unit looks like one of the best in the country. The Vols offense is still a question mark, which puts a ceiling on what this team can do, but the defense is scary. Defensive tackle Xavier Gilliam looks unblockable, and Tennessee created more havoc vs. Alabama than any defense has in an SEC game in 2026.
Despite already having two losses, LSU should still be considered a CFP contender. Both of LSU's losses came down to the final moments on the road vs. quality teams. Power ratings and opponent-adjusted stats suggest LSU is a top-10 team with solid units on both sides of the ball. LSU will be tested this weekend as the Tigers hit the road again to face Auburn. If LSU wins, the Tigers could go on a run in November.
Ole Miss' dominant win over Missouri was convincing. Ole Miss has an elite QB in Trinidad Chambliss, and the Rebels are in good shape on the offensive and defensive lines. Quality play at QB and in the trenches can take a team a long way. Ole Miss is an underdog on the road at Texas this weekend. The Rebels will be tested, but if Pete Golding's squad can pull out a win, their CFP chances are good.
Alabama's loss to Tennessee wasn't enough to convince me the Tide aren't the second-best team in the SEC. I don't want to overreact to one week, especially given how tough that Neyland environment was. Keelon Russell is still a top-three SEC QB, and the Alabama offense will get healthier when Ryan Coleman-Williams eventually returns. Alabama has blowout wins over Mississippi State and Kentucky on the resume.
Despite Georgia's loss to Auburn, the Bulldogs deserve the top spot. Georgia's win at Alabama is still one of the best resume points in the country, and the final score of UGA-Auburn doesn't reflect how well Georgia played. Turnovers and some dumb penalties cost the Bulldogs in a game where they outplayed Auburn on a down-to-down basis.
