Arsenal, Newcastle and Manchester United all keen on Serie A defender

Manchester United are among the clubs tracking Roma wing-back Wesley, with fresh reporting from Sport Witness indicating that Arsenal and Newcastle United are also firmly in the picture. The Brazil international has enjoyed a sharp rise in reputation over the past year, and that has naturally pushed up the cost of any potential deal.

Roma paid €30m to sign Wesley in the summer of 2025, and his development since then appears to have fully justified that outlay. He has become an important figure under Gian Piero Gasperini, adapting impressively after beginning on the right and then establishing himself on the left. That versatility, combined with his athletic profile and growing international standing with Brazil, has brought him onto the radar of several Premier League clubs.

Wesley transfer race gathers pace

The situation is described as a genuine three-way battle, with Manchester United in the market for reinforcements in the full-back areas. Newcastle United are credited with interest, while Arsenal have now entered the chase too. Roma, however, are under no obvious pressure to sell and are in a strong position after the player’s stock rose considerably in Serie A.

That leverage is reflected in the numbers. Wesley was valued at around €30m a year ago, yet any club now looking to prise him away from the Italian capital may need to go close to €60m. For a player who has progressed quickly and become a trusted option for both club and country, that jump is understandable, even if it complicates matters for suitors assessing value in a busy market.

Manchester United face tactical question

There is little doubt Wesley has the quality to attract elite interest. He is dynamic in possession, aggressive carrying the ball forward and capable of stretching the pitch or moving inside when space opens up. Those traits make him highly appealing, particularly for teams wanting greater thrust from wide areas.

The tactical discussion is where this becomes more nuanced. Wesley has excelled as a wing-back, and that distinction matters. Clubs considering him as a conventional full-back must be certain the fit works within their structure. For Manchester United, that is likely to be part of the internal conversation as recruitment plans develop.

Vanderson remains alternative option

That may explain why Monaco’s Vanderson is also being considered by clubs in this bracket. He is viewed as the more attainable option at around €40m and has likewise become a regular for Brazil. If Roma hold their line on Wesley’s asking price, attention could yet shift elsewhere, but for now the Wesley transfer story is one to watch closely.

Our View

From a Manchester United perspective, this is the sort of report that immediately grabs attention. Wesley sounds like a player with top-level tools, and there is no question the squad could use more energy, pace and conviction in the wide defensive roles. When a player is being watched by Arsenal, Newcastle United and others around the top end of the market, it usually tells you his level is already well established.

The exciting part is the profile. A Brazilian international, proven in Serie A, comfortable on either side and trusted in an intense system, that all points to a player who could raise the athletic floor of the team. Supporters have seen for years how important modern full-backs and wing-backs are in building attacks, recovering transitions and creating overloads. Wesley appears to tick plenty of those boxes.

Still, there is a fair concern here. If he is at his best as a wing-back, Manchester United have to be sure they are not paying €60m for a player they would ask to perform a slightly different job every week. That fee is huge, and it demands clarity. If the coaching staff believe the system will consistently suit him, then it is easy to see the appeal. If not, Vanderson being cheaper and perhaps more straightforward tactically may become very relevant. Either way, this feels like a serious market storyline to follow.
