The Ohio High School Athletic Association announced that Glenville's (OH) football team had been removed from postseason eligibility this year on Thursday, Oct. 29.
Two days later, that decision was overturned, for the moment, by a court order.
The OHSAA released a statement late Friday night saying that a court order had been granted, giving the program a temporary restraining order and allowing them to play despite the original decision from the association.
”Following the Ohio High School Athletic Association’s removal of Cleveland Glenville from the football playoffs on Thursday (Oct. 29), the OHSAA is aware of the court order issued today (Friday, Oct. 30) requiring the playing of the football playoff game between Glenville and University School,” the statement reads. “The OHSAA stands by its ruling issued on Thursday (Oct. 29). However, the OHSAA will comply with the court order and is working with the two schools to reschedule the game sometime this weekend.
...A hearing is scheduled for Monday.
To clarify information presented this afternoon, the OHSAA first requested student residential information from Cleveland Metropolitan School District on September 28. The OHSAA received an initial batch of information from CMSD on Oct. 22. On Thursday (Oct. 29) in a meeting with Glenville, the school did not object to the findings of the OHSAA audit."
On Friday, on behalf of the students at Ginn Academy, a Cuyahoga County Common Pleas Court Friday by attorneys Michael Nelson Sr., James Hardiman and Stanley Jackson, filed the motion for the reversal.
Judge Andrew Santoli granted the motion.
Glenville was scheduled to play University School (OH) on Friday and according to a report from FOX 8, the game was rescheduled to Saturday at noon. However, University School issued a statement to the OHSAA saying they would not be playing in that game despite Glenville reportedly being ready to host.
"University School prepared and looked forward to competing in this year’s State Football Tournament in its match-up with Glenville, originally scheduled for the evening of Friday, October 30," the state from the school says. "We were disappointed to learn of the initial cancellation of the contest on Thursday, October 29 and, then, surprised to learn of the temporary restraining order leading the OHSAA to reschedule the game for the afternoon of Saturday, October 31. We will not compete in the now re-scheduled contest, respect the court’s prudence in deciding the ultimate outcome of the legal dispute, and will prepare to compete with Salem on Friday night if that is the resolution."
The original decision from the OHSAA was based on an audit that found that many of the players playing for the Cleveland-area school should be playing for other schools. Many of the players on the team who attend school at Ginn Academy, a magnet school without athletics, were incorrectly assigned to Glenville by the Cleveland Metropolitan School District.
This is the second time since 2018 that program has been hit with a punishment for the same situation.
In 2018 the Tarblooders were fined $5,000 and placed on probation for three years for a similar situation.
Glenville (8-2) was set to enter the postseason as the No. 5 seed in Division III. Last year they won the Division IV championship making it three championship runs in the division since 2022.
