‘Talking Out of His Rear End,’ ‘Doesn’t Make Sense’ — ESPN Host, NFL World Rip Jets HC Aaron Glenn Over ‘Inexcusable’ Clock-Management Gaffe

The New York Jets have given their fans a lot to be frustrated about this season, and Sunday’s loss to the winless Miami Dolphins only added to the list.

The Jets had a chance to use their timeouts and give the offense time to respond before halftime, but they didn’t. When head coach Aaron Glenn was asked about the decision after the game, his explanation only made things worse.

Mike Greenberg Blasts Aaron Glenn Over Jets’ Clock Management Gaffe

The Jets lost 28-25 to the Dolphins after allowing Miami to turn a lengthy second-quarter possession into a touchdown without using any of their three remaining timeouts.

With New York trailing 14-7, Miami put together a 15-play, 91-yard drive that began with 8:44 left in the half. Malik Willis capped it with a two-yard touchdown run, leaving just six seconds before halftime and no time for Geno Smith to respond.

Asked about the decision, Glenn said, “Maybe we should’ve called our timeouts to get it back, but at that point, we just felt like we were going to stop them and be able to get the ball back.”

ESPN host Mike Greenberg was among the harshest critics, calling Glenn’s explanation “inexcusable.”

Greenberg wrote on X, “This answer is inexcusable. Game management is the most important part of this job, and Glenn is as bad at it as any coach I’ve ever seen. There may not be any point in making the change now, but it’s over; it’s just a matter of when.”

Jets reporter Connor Hughes also struggled to understand Glenn’s reasoning, posting, “This doesn’t make sense.”

Ryan Paganetti, a Super Bowl winner with the Eagles, said the Jets’ owner and general manager should listen in on the coaching headset to find out whether Glenn is receiving bad advice from his assistants.

He wrote, “Owner and GM need to listen in on the headset to figure out what is going on. Either he is getting really bad information or ignoring whatever is being said. Constant problems in front of millions can only be resolved with a full live audit of what is taking place.”

New York sports commentator Brandon Tierney focused on Glenn’s choice of words, reacting, “Maybe? MAYBE?!?!”

Meanwhile, former MLB executive David P. Samson questioned the oversight from ownership, writing, “Is anyone paying attention? Is Woody Johnson in England? He will be fired before next season as surely as the sun will rise tomorrow.”

The frustration extended to the fanbase, with the Jets falling to 2-5 after losing to a Dolphins team that entered the game winless at 0-5.

“Jets Talk Now” host Paul Fiore separated Glenn’s playing career from his performance as a head coach, writing, “A really good player… a really bad HC. AG, I appreciate how much you wanted to be the HC… I really do. I am done.”

Former New York Giants beat writer Chris Bis offered a shorter assessment: “Dead man walking.”

Content creator Blair “Bubbs” was similarly blunt, writing, “Aaron Glenn has said a lot of dumb things. This might take the cake. Talking out of his rear end.”

The clock-management controversy adds to a difficult stretch for Glenn, whose Jets have struggled against AFC East opponents. New York ranks No. 20 in the league with a PFN Offense Impact Score of 73.2 and No. 19 with a PFN Defense Impact Score of 74.1.

Across Glenn’s 24 games in charge, the Jets have been outscored 107-6 in the final two minutes of the first half.

As criticism of his decisions grows, Glenn faces mounting pressure to get the team back on track. If the struggles continue, questions about his future in New York will only grow louder.
