Keighley Cougars get former Hunslet man as Danny Burton gone

Jackson’s arrival means the popular Danny Burton has left the club, who joined the coaching staff 18 months ago while Alan Kilshaw was in charge.

Burton briefly served as head coach after Kilshaw’s exit for Oldham at the start of this year, while he went back to being assistant when Ian Hardman took charge.

Bramald spoke earlier this month about wanting to keep Burton, but despite Cougars' best efforts, he has left.

Cougars co-owner Ryan O'Neill told the T&A: "Danny has decided to leave his post as assistant at Keighley Cougars.

"Danny has been a tremendous asset to the club, and an absolute joy to work with.

"We offered Danny a new contract, and expressed our wish for him to stay at the club.

"Over the last month, Danny has been considering the time and travel commitments needed for the role, and was very upfront and transparent with us about it.

"He has decided that for his work/life balance he prefers to step back and take up opportunities in the community game closer to home.

"We wish Danny well and every success for his future."

Thankfully, Cougars have brought in a more than credible replacement.

Jackson brings plenty of coaching experience from his time with Hunslet and Rochdale Hornets.

Having been part of the coaching team that helped Hunslet secure promotion from League 1 in 2024, Jackson also knows what goes into preparing a squad for the challenges of a competitive season.

He now joins Bramald at Cougar Park as preparations gather pace, with a reshaped squad and plenty to look forward to when pre-season gets underway.

Bramald said: “I’m really pleased to welcome Ryan to the coaching team.

“His experience will be valuable as we bring this group together and get to work on the training field.

“Having a strong coaching partnership is important, and I’m looking forward to working with Ryan to help our players develop and get the best out of the squad.”

Cougars’ head of rugby operations Richard Dibbin added: “Getting the right people around Matty has been an important part of our preparations, and we’re delighted Ryan is coming on board.

“There’s been plenty happening behind the scenes, and bringing Ryan into the coaching team is another positive step.

“We’re excited to see everyone come together and start putting the work in for 2027.”
