Plymouth Argyle player ratings from chastening Stevenage setback

The Pilgrims have been excellent away from home throughout 2026 but were outplayed and outfought in a 3-0 defeat at Stevenage

Here are the player ratings of The Herald's Argyle reporter Chris Errington from the 3-0 League One defeat away to Stevenage.. You can give your marks too using our special widget further down this story.

Murphy Cooper 5 - Not a happy return to Broadhall Way for the former Stevenage goalkeeper as he conceded three goals. Cooper will probably feel he should have done better when he pushed a cross which was fired towards the six-yard area out in front of him and Northern Ireland international forward Josh Magennis was there to slot home.

Joe Edwards 4 - Returned to captain the team after sitting out the 2-0 home defeat by Huddersfield Town due to a hamstring issue but playing at right-back he struggled to deal with Ben Broggio, and later on substitute Phoenix Patterson, as Stevenage had a lot of attacking success down that side of the pitch.

Alex Mitchell 4 - Usually so reliable for the Pilgrims, this was not up to the standard of performance that Argyle have come to expect from him. In fairness to Mitchell, the same could be said for virtually all of his team-mates.

Alex Hartridge 4 - The combination of Alex Mitchell and Hartridge has not been good enough in the last two games and is unlikely to be repeated in the game at Cambridge United on Saturday. Stevenage strikers Josh Magennis and Michael Mellon completely had the upper hand.

Wes Harding 4 - Did not have a good game but the constant chopping and changing of his position between left and right-back at the start of this season has almost certainly not helped him find any rhythm when it comes to his performances.

Ronan Curtis 4 - Really should have scored late in the first half, which would have cut Argyle's deficit to 2-1, when he met an excellent deep cross from Oli Irow with a powerful header but wastefully sent his header narrowly over the bar. Curtis did not reappear after half-time as he was substituted.

Tyreeq Bakinson 5 - Was probably the one Argyle outfield player in the starting line-up who showed some quality and composure on the ball at times. Bakinson appeared to be obstructed by referee Thomas Parsons when he tried to get to the ball in the centre circle before Stevenage launched an attack which eventually led Josh Magennis putting them 2-0 up.

Harvey White 4 - The Stevenage supporters were not slow in reminding their former midfielder of the difficulties Argyle were in during the game. He would have hoped for so much better from his first match against the club he left in the summer.

Oli Irow 4 - Back in the starting line-up after a substitute appearance against Huddersfield, the Tottenham Hotspur loanee clearly did not do enough to impress Tom Cleverley as he was replaced in the wide left attacking role by Caleb Watts at the start of the second half.

Will Evans 4 - Had one early scoring chance when he controlled an angled pass from Harvey White before shooting wide but, other than that, Evans and his strike partner Bim Pepple were well dealt with by Stevenage centre-backs Terence Vancooten and Carl Piergianni.

Bim Pepple 4 - Argyle's top scorer has not been the same in the last couple of games after missing the 2-1 home victory over AFC Wimbledon on October 10 because of hamstring tightness. He had proved far too strong for opposition defenders for most of this season, but not against Huddersfield or Stevenage.

SUBSTITUTES

Xavier Amaechi 7 STAR MAN - The only choice for Star Man even though he was a half-time substitute. Provided an attacking spark on the right of midfield and was the only Argyle player who looked likely to score. Has not been so effective when starting games but will surely get another opportunity to do so at Cambridge this weekend.

Caleb Watts 6 - Was a half-time replacement for Oli Irow on the left of midfield and while not having quite the same impact as Xavier Amaechi did off the bench, Watts did inject some energy into the Argyle team.

Bradley Ibrahim - Sent on in the 76th minute for Tyreeq Bakinso, shortly after the on-loan Leyton Orient midfielder almost gifted Stevenage a third goal with a loose pass from which Dan Kemp was denied a goal by a part-save from Murphy Cooper and then a headed clearance from Harvey White.

Matty Sorinola - Also came off the bench for Argyle in the 76th minute, in his case for Joe Edwards, but soon afterwards Stevenage scored their third goal and from then on the home side called all the shots.

Julio Pleguezuelo - Was an 87th minute susbtitute at centre-back for Alex Hartridge, who had started a second successive game in four days after a recent spell out with an ankle injury.

Substitutes not used: James Storer, Jack MacKenzie.
