Bayern Munich winger Michael Olise was served a tough lesson in this week’s Champions League game against Viking FK. Heavily outmatched on paper, the Norwegian side fought with what they had until successfully goading him into a senseless red card that turned the tide and resulted in a dramatic 3-3 draw with the German record champions.
The red card meansOlise will miss Bayern’s Champions League match against Arsenal next week. But despite the setback, Bayern board member for sport Max Eberl promised that Olise is ready to learn from the incident.
“When you see the way Michael plays football, and how his opponents treat him on the pitch, then that’s part of football,” Eberl said in comments captured by Sky Germany (via @iMiaSanMia). “He has to push through it. He shouldn’t let himself be provoked and has to make sure he wins his duel with the opponent. But Michael is completely clear about that. For now, we have him available against Leipzig, and that’s the most important thing.”
As for whether Bayern would address the incident, Eberl noted that any measures taken were all internal, as promised.
“We’ve discussed the matter and settled it internally. The whole thing is now over,” Eberl continued.
So far, it appears that Olise has let others do the talking about what transpired. Hopefully, he will also let his play do the talking once he gets back to the pitch. Still, it will be interesting to hear how he addresses the situation—or whether he will.
