There are plenty of near misses in the world of transfers, with famous stories of superstars who came close to joining a different club that could have changed the course of history.

One such case from 2025 has come to light, with it being revealed that Liverpool pushed hard to sign Khvicha Kvaratskhelia from Napoli. The winger was among the most dangerous players in the world after lighting up Serie A and the Champions League with the Azzurri, as he helped the club make a mark in Italy and Europe.

In 107 appearances, Kvaratskhelia scored 30 goals and assisted 29 times, showing his quality with his outstanding dribbling skills and pace to burn.

However, in the January transfer window of 2025, it was revealed that the Georgian international wanted to leave the club so he could experience a new challenge elsewhere in the world. That prompted the biggest clubs to start investigating the possibility of a move that winter.

Among them was Liverpool, but while the Reds seemingly pushed for the forward's signature, it was ultimately Paris Saint-Germain that won the race to sign him for roughly $90 million.

The rumors surrounding the Merseyside outfit pushing for Kvaratskhelia were few and far between, but Fabrizio Romano has since revealed that the 25-year-old almost made his move to Anfield, instead of the Parc des Princes.

Speaking on DAZN, the reporter said: "Kvara [Kvaratskhelia] has won an incredible amount of awards at Paris Saint-Germain, but remember, it was nearly Liverpool and not Paris.

"An inside story from January 2025, when Kvaratskhelia decided to leave Napoli, to try something new, and from Premier League there were aggressive teams really keen on signing him.

"Chelsea were calling, but was not possible to make the deal happen. Chelsea were even prepared to include Mykhailo Mudryk in the negotiation with Napoli.

"And then Liverpool, also trying, Liverpool very keen on Kvaratskhelia, but the player decided to go to PSG."

On the reason why, he added: "PSG presented a very ambitious project and well, then was a very smart from PSG to sign Kvaratskhelia and for Kvara to move to Paris. But Liverpool were really there, Liverpool tried, but it was not possible to proceed."

Who knows whether Kvaratskhelia could have reached the heights at Liverpool as he has at PSG, but the quality he has suggests that the Reds missed out on a quality option for the attack.

Instead, the Reds pushed hard in the following transfer windows to bolster the forward ranks, signing Alexander Isak and Florian Wirtz, while the most recent summer saw Kvaratskhelia's old PSG teammate, Bradley Barcola, move to Anfield.

After missing out on one of the best players in the world as it stands, the Merseyside outfit will now be hoping its new arrivals can make their mark.
