Wolves blame injuries on Championship physicality
Cesar Peixoto directs the midfield traffic during Wolves' 1-0 home win over Watford at Molineux (Saturday 23 October 2026).
Cesar Peixoto's Wolves have lost just three times in their first 12 Championship matches

Wolverhampton Wanderers boss Cesar Peixoto admits that he is frustrated by the "unfortunate" number of injuries his side have suffered this season.

But he has countered any suggestion that too many might have been caused by the club's training regime, pointing out that they have largely been "trauma" injuries, not "muscular".

"It is not because we are not managing it well," Peixoto told BBC Radio WM. "Only three of the injuries we have had have been muscular injuries.

"It is not a pattern of injuries. It is not that we do bad work.

"We try to control all we can, but we cannot control all these things.

"There is more physical contact in the Championship. Trauma injuries are difficult to control. It is going to happen. It is unfortunate.

"Sometimes you can just be unlucky."

Peixoto came in for criticism for playing Wolves favourite Raul Jimenez in the League Cup defeat at Everton immediately before the Black Country derby.

The veteran Mexican is now sidelined until at least January after knee surgery, while Bertrand Traore (hamstring) and Boubacar Traore (calf) remain out, as does Nasser Djiga (groin).

But, on the flip side of the coin, it was through no fault of their own that Wolves were also left without influential Wales midfielder Jordan James thanks to a foot injury sustained on international duty.

Having James available for Wolves' third successive home game will be a boost after his influential contributions the last two, although Peixoto does also have Rodrigo Gomes fit after four games out with his ankle injury.

James came off the bench to score what should have proved the winner against Portsmouth but for a freakish late equaliser, then started for only the second time since his August arrival in last Saturday's 1-0 home win over Watford.

But James is expected to be for the Molineux arrival of Welsh side Cardiff City, who Wolves will be especially wary of after the way the Bluebirds turned over Birmingham City last week.

Cesar Peixoto's breakdown of Wolves' injuries issued at Friday's Compton Park press conference.
