Brock Purdy has established himself as one of the NFL's most effective quarterbacks at making difficult throws over the middle.
According to ESPN's Nick Wagoner, Purdy leads the league in passing yards on tight-window throws between the hashes since the start of the 2025 season. He is also tied for second in completions on those passes.
ESPN defines a tight-window throw as one in which the intended receiver has less than a yard of separation when the ball arrives. Those passes require quarterbacks to anticipate openings between defenders and deliver the football with precise timing.
Purdy's success in that area is not new. Since becoming the San Francisco 49ers' starting quarterback in 2022, he ranks second in the NFL in passing yards and yards per attempt on throws between the hashes. He is also tied for third in touchdown passes on those throws among quarterbacks with at least 30 starts during that span.
The numbers help illustrate an important part of Purdy's game in Kyle Shanahan's offense. Rather than simply relying on open receivers, he must consistently fit passes into narrow windows while accounting for linebackers dropping into coverage and defensive backs closing from the secondary.
Purdy has continued to produce at a high level in 2026. Through five games, he has completed 69% of his passes for 1,196 yards and 13 touchdowns against two interceptions, posting a 119.3 passer rating.
Purdy's ability to attack the middle of the field provides another measurable example of why he has emerged as one of the league's most productive quarterbacks. His efficiency on difficult throws has become a defining feature of his performance in San Francisco's offense.
